The aim of the current study was to examine the effect of verbal and non-verbal elements of a speaker in TV and public speeches on the audience's impression, credibility, and perceived leadership of the speaker. For this, I collected data after conducting a survey for the two experimental groups. The first group watched the TV speech and the second group watched public speech respectively. I raised the total nine research questions and conducted a multiple regression analysis in order to find the answers the questions. Results showed that for the TV speech condition, only verbal elements affected the impression of the speaker and for the public speech condition, both of visual and verbal elements affected the impression but visual elements had the greater impact. However, vocal elements had no effect. Second, for both of the TV and public speeches conditions, verbal elements had greater effect on credibility than visual elements. However, vocal elements had no effect. Third, for the TV speech condition only verbal elements affected perceived leadership whereas for the public speech condition visual elements had greater effect on perceived leadership than verbal elements. However vocal elements had no effect. Contradictory to the previous findings of Mehrabian's studies, vocal elements of the speaker didn't affected any aspects of the audience's perceptions such as impression, credibility, and leadership of the speaker. Finally, I discussed some of the limitation of the present study and suggested directions for the future.
