Gayagum is one of traditional instruments in our country that is played by plucking the strings with fingers, and there have been the most changes in this instrument than any other traditional instrument, since lots of efforts have been made to let this instrument coexist with modern music or Western music in order to pass our traditional music onto the next generations and step up the development of the instrument. The purpose of this study was to examine the origin and development of Gayagum. 'Gayagum' is the Sino-Korean name of the instrument, and the original name of it was 'Gayatgo.' According to ancient literature involving Samguksaki, this instrument was created by King Gasil approximately 1,300 years ago, and there were initially two different types of Gayagum: 12-stringed Pungryu Gayagum and Sanjo Gayagum. Since 13-stringed Gayagum was created by Sung Geum-ryeon, this instrument has made a full-fledged development, and there are now various kinds of Gayagum, including metal-stringed Gayagum, 15-stringed Gayagum, 17-stringed Gayagum, 18-stringed Gayagum, 22-stringed Gayagum, 25-stringed Gayagum and Low‧Middle‧High-Gayagu, At first, this instrument made use of a traditional pentatonic scale, and then the instrument was improved to use a heptatonic scale, which is used by Western music. As for materials, paulownia and chestnut trees were utilized in the past, and polyester that is a synthetic material is now used, which serves to strengthen the sound and make it last longer. Thanks to the improvement of the instrument, it's possible to play Gayagum and Western instruments in concert by applying different sorts of tuning method, and to play multiple kinds of music involving modern music on the Gayagum. Various works composed by modern composers can be played on the Gayagum, and new Gayagum works have been composed as this instrument has been improved. All the improvement of the instrument has served to ensure its sustainable development. Indeed, there have been more diverse changes in this instrument than any other traditional instrument, and this study is significant in that it attempted to shed light on the structural characteristics of the different sorts of Gayagum, the characteristics of their materials and the tuning methods to seek ways toward the harmony of this instrument with Western and modern music.
