Mainly based on Chapter 4 “Environmental Issues and Community from Social Studies Textbooks for 1st Grade of High School Students원문보기
(DESD: Decade of Education for Sustainable Development)으로 정해 인류의 지속가능발전을 위한 각국의 교육적 대응을 촉구했다. ...
(DESD: Decade of Education for Sustainable Development)으로 정해 인류의 지속가능발전을 위한 각국의 교육적 대응을 촉구했다.

After the industrial revolution, environmental changes were taking place behind the scenes while people were enjoying material wealth represented by mass production and mass consumption. By the time people recognized those changes, another wave of change in the name of globalization manifested itself, blocking the way of sustainable development. Ensuring education for sustainable development is all the more important because it determines not only the fate of one generation but many generations to come. The UN urges governments around world to take necessary steps to provide education tools for sustainable development for all human races by designating the decade of 2005 - 2014 as the 'UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development', or DESD. ESD is focused on building generous society, achieving balanced growth as well as ethical consumption by reflecting principles and action plans of sustainability on every level of education. According to UNESCO’s 2005 definition, ESD is a learning process which provides all the members of society with the opportunity to benefit from quality education so that they are able to learn values, behaviors and lifestyles required for a sustainable future and for positive societal transformation. This study aims to analyze how social studies textbooks deal with ESD and explore ways to make improvements. To be able to do that, I conduct surveys targeting those teaching 1st Graders at high schools social studies to find out their level of understandings on ESD and learn from them. I’d like to point out that how important ESD is in social studies textbooks using Romey’s quantitative analysis method and make an analysis on contents and components of ESD in the educational field based on criteria suggested by the NationalCommissionforandthereby making suggestions for social studies textbooks to be revised in the future. The results from my study show that Chapter 4 “Environmental issues and community” encourages students to pursue further research. The body of the chapter merely deals with terms related to sustainable development but the additional section gives students opportunities to participate in extra activities related to sustainable development. Therefore students can learn what is happening in their local community by researching through various channels such as newspapers and the internet. In this regard, students are motivated to be more research oriented. What’s interesting is that eight social studies textbooks encourage students to take active participation in finding answers because getting the answers for quizzes or questions in those textbooks is only possible when students make extra efforts such as group discussion or making their own conclusion. But I’d like to make point that the proportion of contents of sustainable development is not good enough given the importance of this subject. Because future generations will need more accurate and systematic knowledge on sustainable development, since they will address this concept more frequently. Some claim that we need to reduce the content of social studies textbooks. Under these circumstances, it may be difficult to put more content related to sustainable development in social studies textbooks. But I firmly believe that more contents of sustainable development need to be included in social studies textbooks so that our children and grandchildren are given enough education on sustainable development. ESD is critical in order to prepare for the future. The advancement of biotechnology along with medical development enables people to live longer. But due to those developments, we are faced with new challenges. Developed countries are struggling with low fertility rates on the other hands, developing ones are grappling with exponential growth in population due to medical breakthroughs and high fertility rates. We are also witnessing various kinds of social issues that include environmental degradation caused by industrialization, gaps between the rich and the poor and conflicts arising from cultural differences. Therefore it is crucial to provide children with education necessary to cope with these new challenges. This education should be conducted in a comprehensive manner, but given the educational system in Korea, social studies textbooks need to put more emphasis on sustainable development.
