This study aims to find out the potential for the work quality of creative musicals. To complement the work quality of creative musicals, the study especially suggests a successful case of Jonathan Larson’s 「Rent」 with a motive based on Giacomo Puccini’s 「La Boheme」 and states its opinion. For the theoretical background of the comparative analysis, it studies the opera history, musical characteristics by time, and movement backgrounds and development history of musicals from the baroque period to the present, and then it can find that both operas and musicals have been developed by public desire. In addition, there is a similarity between operas and musicals in that both of two are the dramatic art. However, there are differences in terms of the intention and the purpose of making a play, and therefore genre characteristics and the components are different. As an opera is the art for the special class, its musical aspects are formed so that it keeps its characteristics and emphasizes artistic aspects. On the other hand, a musical is developed according to the public trend as pop culture so it is deeply connected to a flexible and public goal of a box-office hit compared to an opera. For the study on creative musicals with public and artistic values, this study focused on a musical 「Rent」 showing the mixed history of an opera and a musical that have been developed as its own genre. The reason is that the art value of「Rent」is highly praised as it won the Pulitzer Prize, and it has been a Broadway musical for such 12 long years and it was a very successful work with the highest album sales among musicals. This researcher focused on the fact that there is an opera 「La Boheme」 behind such a success. 「Rent」 affected by 「La Boheme」that selected the problems of the times and used verismo characters also attracted the pubic interest as the dramatized work with a material of problems of the time. Besides, it borrowed a musical theme melody from 「La Boheme」 and made an attempted to mix play and music intimately, considering importance of a script and music, which shows it is affected by Puccini. Jonathan Larson finally accepted differences between two genres, borrowed excellence of 「La Boheme」 and complemented insufficient dramatic elements, so he could create 「Rent」 with the artistic value. Therefore, Korean musical industries hopefully find out solutions to problems of artistic values from a success of 「Rent」 because it is much more efficient to find out similarities between the two genres, complementing, and developing, instead of considering an opera and a music different. It is sincerely hoped that this study finds out a new and desirable direction for creative musicals and becomes a starting point to promote the development of the art world.
