The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of switching barriers on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention in the beauty service industry and prevent a marketing strategy for maintaining customers in the industry by increasing the barriers. While beauty shops lacked supply, as compared with demand, in the past, the present ones have changed into the customer-driven market with more supply than demand. With an overflow of beauty shops, competitive beauty shops are making many kinds of cutthroat price competition or holding a free-gift event to make their customers into loyal ones. It is ultimately necessary to increase switching barriers in order to provide cumulative customer satisfaction with thorough customer management and service for the existing customers. This study examined the effects of such sub-factors of switching barriers as switching costs, alternative attractiveness, and human relationships on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention. An empirical analysis was performed using a survey with 246 adult customers, regardless of gender, residing in Incheon, with 249 questionnaires used in the analysis. Exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis were carried out to test hypotheses in this study. As a result, first, the hypothesis that switching costs would affect customer satisfaction and repurchase intention was rejected. Customers had no significant effect on procedures for membership, mileage, and the length of time for getting familiar with other beauty shops in visiting beauty shops. In the competitive beauty market which is saturated, customers can discover conclusion that they can leave anytime in search of alternatives without giving attention to switching costs. Second, the hypothesis that low alternative attractiveness and human relationships would affect customer satisfaction and repurchase intention was adopted. For beauty shops, a high level of technology, human relationships, accessibility of customers to shops, and positive word-of-mouth as compared with competitors significantly affected customer satisfaction and repurchase intention, and human relationships and low alternative attractiveness of switching barriers played moderating roles between customer satisfaction and repurchase intention. Third, the hypothesis that customer satisfaction would affect repurchase intention was adopted. This result shows that customers satisfied with use of a beauty shop will not only have higher repurchase intention but also have higher store loyalty by recommending the shop to other customers through positive word-of-mouth. To put the results together, what is important most of all is to form reciprocal human relationships between customers using a beauty shop and a service provider and customer satisfaction in order to maintain constant visit, and the service provider needs to improve the quality of service, provide high-quality service to customers, make its alternatives more attractive, prevent customer churn, and maximize profits for the beauty shop with long-term revisit.
