This study was conducted to understand the distribution, habitats characteristics, egg-hatching, morphological variation and ecology for Triops longicaudatus, which was endangered species in Korea. The principal results as follows.
1. This study was carried out to examine the distribution and habitat characteristics of tadpole shrimps (Triops longicaudatus) collected from May 2006 to July 2008 in Korea. Tadpole shrimps were found from the paddy fields and temporary puddle at 21 countries in South Korea. They appeared between May and July throughout the year and survived for 30 days, when the thermal range for their occurrence was measured from 10.7℃ to 33.5℃. The average turbidity of experimental paddy fields was considerably higher than that of controlled fields; the former was 176.8(±239.3) NTU, while the latter was 28.9(±26.7) NTU. Our results represented that the life pattern of tadpole shrimps is adapted to a temporary water pool and unstable environmental conditions, and also there was great effect of agricultural activity on the development and growth of tadpole shrimps. The species numbers and individuals density of benthic macroinvetebrates became similar among habitats and non-habitats of paddy fields using organic farming. However paddy fields using conventional farming decreased than paddy fields using organic farming.
2. A total of 156 individuals at 11 countries of Triops longicaudatus was investigated for the following characteristics: head shield length, eye extension, furca length, body length, number of abdominal segments, number of legless segments and telson of median spines. The carapace and body length were not observed in significant differences because it was mixed of adults and juveniles into each regional populations. Among the individuals the lowest number of abdominal segments was 23 segments and the highest was 26 segments and the lowest number of legless segments was 4 segments and the highest was 7 segments. Also, the total of median spine on dorsal telson was observed range from 3 to 5 among regional populations. The results were to show the variability in morphological features within each regional populations.
3. Eggs of T. longicaudatus in this study were obtained from the adults collected from Andong-si, Kyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, in July 2006. The highest hatching rate was the 80.0(±9.43)% in average at 35℃. The thermal threshold for hatching was derived at 6.66℃. However, eggs were not hatched both below at 10℃ and over at 50℃ during the experimental period.
4. Growth and other biological processes in aquatic organisms are particularly dependent on water temperature and depth. This study examined the effects of water temperature on the growth of Triops longicaudatus. The growth rate became higher as increasing temperature within the critical temperature. The mean carapace length was 5.7(±2.1) mm in a water temperature of 20℃ and 7.5(±0.5) mm in a water temperature of 28℃ on the 14th day after submergence. It was 6.9(±2.8) mm in a water temperature of 20℃ and 7.8(±2.0) mm in a water temperature of 28℃ on the 21st day after submergence. The mean carapace length grew rapidly within 14 days after submergence, but increase in carapace length beyond this time was slow. The influence of water depth fluctuations was low as the mean carapace length was 9.3(±2.1) mm in a water depth of 80 mm and 9.5(±1.3) mm under a water depth of 190 mm on the 19th days after submergence. Biomass showed that the carapace length of 5, 10, 16 and 20 mm was a dry-weight of 1.1(±0.3), 18.0(±3.7), 26.0(±0.0) and 52.3(±4.0) mg respectively. The number of eggs increased rapidly with increments in carapace length. The mean number of eggs was 20(±0.0) at a carapace length of 7.0 mm, but at a carapace length of 17.0 mm, the mean number of eggs was 560(±0.0). The results suggested that differences in water temperature accounted for the differences in length of the carapace and the number of eggs.
