The purpose of this study is to examine how the early English language learning experience affects the third graders' English learning. It was investigated where they get the education and how it influences their affective and linguistic domains including interest, confidence, achievement, understanding, writing and reading ability and so on. Based on the results, suggestions were made on how to improve the elementary school English education. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 177 third graders attending an elementary school located in Gwangju. The major results in this study are as follows. First, 92 per cent of the subjects had the experience of early English education, which means most of the students have experienced the early English education. Also, 65 per cent of the students started their English study in the first or second grade. Second, there are various places for the students to receive early English education. One of them is the academy where the largest number of the subjects learned English. When it comes to studying contents, it was found that most of the students learned how to read and write, and studied vocabulary in particular. Also, it was found out that 81.6 per cent students took classes at the academy more than 3 times a week, which shows that they are highly dependent on it. Third, those students who have early English language learning experience have higher interest, understanding and confidence in English than those who do not. Fourth, the subjects' interest in learning English was dependent on the teaching methods. Fifth, when it comes to writing and reading simple English words and sentences, it was found that early educated students' achievement in English skills is higher. However, the longer the study period is, the less interested in English language learning the students are. Now suggestions are made as follows: First, studies need to be conducted in order to figure out how to accommodate those students who have already learned some English beforehand in elementary school English classes. Second, a diverse fun and meaningful teaching methods should be developed and used in English classes as those students who are more interested in English were found out to make higher accomplishment. Third, though early English language learning experience has some positive influence on elementary school children's English learning, it should be noted that the long study period may cause children lose interest in learning English. More than 92 per cent of the subjects in this study started learning English earlier than 3rd grade, which imposes a heavy burden on parents for private education expenditure. More practical and efficient ways should be developed on how to meet the demands of early English language learning within the formal education system.
