Lee Yuksa (1904-1944), born in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, was once actively engaged in the resistance against Japanese invasion in the time of Korea being the colony of Japan, and died in a prison in Beijing just 6 months before Korea recovery. Lee, jailed for many times in his life, was living in poverty and danger. Yun Dongju (1917-1945), born in Beijian Province, was once arrested in the name of participation in independent war by the local police during his overseas studies in Japan and later died in Fukuoka prison. Both are the representative anti-Japanese poets in that crucial period. This thesis, based upon current researches, is to analyze both Lee’s and Yun’s internal Existentialism and the reflection in their poems, by means of Aabye Kierkegaard’s Three Periods Theory. Through disclosure of the poems’ taking shape, Existentialism comes as one of the effective methodologies to conduct further research. The First Section of Chapter II analyzes the background at the end of Japanese invasion as well as the contemporary situation of the poem area. Both Lee’s and Yun’s existential mentality and literature resistance are examined in the Second Section. Lee, a revolutionary intellectual, tried, in the primary stage, to subvert the dark social reality by participation of anti-Japanese movement, which was in contrast to Yun, who strived for the success of anti-Japanese invasion by consistent pursuit of internal purity and self-reflection. Chapter III conducts a further research upon the formation of their poems. Immersing in traditional education at a young age paved solid mental foundation for Lee’s poem creation. Lee’s thoughts were greatly influenced by the classic and contemporary literature, Luxun’s social revolutionary mentality and HSU Chih-mo’s Aesthetic movement in particular, as well as European literature and philosophy. Yun was born into a Christian family and developed a great interest in literature. He was influenced by the Existentialism of Aabye Kierkegaard, as well as the Modernism of Jeong Ji-yong and Hometown mentality of Beek Sok. The First Section of Chapter IV employs the Aesthetic Stage theory of Aabye Kierkegaard to conduct an in-depth research upon the Lee’s poems in the time of roaming far away from the hometown, as well as Yun’s conception and children’s poems at an early stage. In addition, Lee’s experience of many arrests and long time roaming was clearly reflected by those descriptions of desolate hometowns and roaming life after the Japanese invasion. Yun’s perceptional image in his early poems is an example that he realized the value of his being limited existence. The Second Section of Chapter IV puts that both Lee and Yun sought ethical responsibility against the background of the rude reality. Lee never gave up hopes for future and displayed, in contrast, a strong will to fight the Japanese invaders. Lee promoted the effectiveness of his poems by adding unique ideology in his lyrics. Yun chose continuous self-reflection of his own heart, rather than engage in the resistance movement, to show his limitless love for his peoples and compatriots, and to further express his hope for the future. The Third Section of Chapter IV shows how the two poets overcome the miserable reality. Lee chose neither to escape nor to succumb to reality. He had a good idea of the social background and launched ceaseless fights. In his short life, although Lee did not reach the zenith of religious existence, he realized the unity of action and ideal. In accordance, Lee’s own lyrical characteristics took shape in the course of resistance and fights. Yun became the lonely being in front of God, by overcoming such pessimistice motions as fear, boredom, gloom and despair. Yun finally came up to religious existence, by first being consciou softhelove of God and the next ending it to the universal love forth epublic. For the purpose of resisting the invasion of Japanese imperialists, Lee made full use of his action and poems to express his hope and precise judgment for the future. Influenced by Christianity, Yun brought the Western Existentialism into exercise and contributed to the contemporary intellectual history in Korea. Actually, Lee and Yun were two typicalanti-Japanese poets in Korean literature. One is to participate in to war and try to find the knot point with literature; the other is to overcome and surpass reality by continuous self-reflection. The two methods, embedded with its own characteristics despite of some overlaps, were just an important reason for Korean literature to pass down in the time of Japanes einvasion.
