A set of large and small piles for ancient wooden walls (about 250 meters long) was found in Bangu-dong, Ulsan, Korea. The wooden walls is unique in the structure; it was composed of watchtower buildings and defending walls. Each watchtower buildings consisted of four wood columns. The defending walls were constructed with vertical and horizontal wooden elements. It supposed to be a sea defending facility by an archaeological excavation. The specific time when it was built, however, was not revealed. To find that, tree-ring and radiocarbon dating was conducted. Species identification was also executed. The 223 elements were examined and identified into 7 species; Pinus (13.5%), Platycarya (1.8%), Carpinus (0.4%), Castanea (30.5%), Quercus (50.2%), Zelkova (2.2%) and Acer spp(1.3%). Especially, columns (average diameter: 53.0 cm) and piles (average diameter: 34.1 cm), big-sized elements, were made of Pinus, Castanea and Zelkova spp. Especially, Castanea and Zelkova spp. were known for their rigidity and durability. It seemed there was selection for wood species. The vegetation and the quality must have been influenced. Most of pegs, small-sized elements, were identified as Quercus spp.(60.6%). The elements of the single species were located in a row. Though the all of elements were not examined, there is a possibility that several elements were cut from a single species. Relative dates from tree-ring dating of watchtower buildings indicated that all buildings were contemporary. After the construction of the watchtower building, the fence lines were constructed with one-year interval. The result of radiocarbon dating indicated that the Bangu-dong wooden fence was built in A.D.829~929 (95.4 confidence interval), from the end of Unified Silla dynasty (617-918) to the early Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). The AMS date resulted from a series of eight samples in each 10 years of tree-ring for 80 years, i.e., by the method of wiggle matching. The AMS dating result confirmed the date speculated by archaeological investigation.
