Universities in Korea have grown significantly both in size and quality. This resulted in many construction works to accommodate growing number of students. With too many buildings in the campus, green space was lost and ecosystem was hurt, hampering the role of a campus to provide green space for the neighborhood.
University campuses have traditionally played the role of a park with their green space besides providing a talent pool as a hall of learning. With growing students, however, buildings aged, energy use increased, and lecture and research space ran short. This caused universities to make excessive investment in facilities, consequently raising building density and reducing the tangible and intangible environmental benefit campuses have delivered.
This paper intends to offer an alternative way to build a more sustainable and eco-friendlier university campus. It looks at "green campus" planning, necessary factors to consider in the process and the most influential factor among them. It also contains the result of research into current "green campus" efforts and compares different environmental characteristics of those universities engaged in such efforts, finally analyzing the effect brought on by "green campus."
Accordingly, research was conducted in the following seven areas. First, land use plan: despite extensive development, greenspace ratio in campuses surveyed remained at a good level. However, without appropriate restrictions, green space will soon be threatened. Second, transportation plan: most universities surveyed had good access to mass transportation and had built underground parking lot to secure necessary parking space. Third, pollution reduction: universities surveyed were still behind the general efforts to reduce carbon emission. Forth, resource conservation: universities had good records of separate garbage collection. In the use of remodelling, they had 50% of their buildings in worn-out conditions and remodelled 21.7% of them on average, meaning that they resorted to partial repair and enhancement to extend building service life. Fifth, energy saving: not many natural/renewable energy facilities were found much despite the much-talked about slogan of green campus. However, these facilities will soon be introduced actively given the rate of adoption in newly constructed buildings. Sixth, energy-saving lighting systems were introduced to most new buildings. Their cost effectiveness, however, remains to be seen. Seventh, ecosystem conservation: universities surveyed had fairly good green space in the first or second grade. Some universities were found to make efforts to expand man-made green space in buildings. However, these cases were only a few.
Research results in the above-mentioned seven areas helped to identify the conditions universities were in and the efforts they were making to realize green campus. However, there have not been many outstanding eco-friendly results compared with the efforts to construct and maintain large-scale buildings. Nevertheless, universities now have changing awareness of green campus and put efforts accordingly. This should lead to much improvement in the future. This paper will help universities grow in eco-friendlier and more progressive and efficient way together with local community.
Also, this paper will be a useful foundation in the efforts to build green campus by showing both exemplary cases which received good evaluation and the others which can be improved further. With more number of universities to compare and analyze, the paper would have produced clearer and more realistic outcome. The shortfall, however, will need to be made up by continuos efforts to develop green evaluation indicators. This paper intends to provide an objective and rational basis in building green campus.
