This study is aimed at finding out the effects of integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales on children's story comprehension and safety competence.
To this objective, the following reseach questions have been set up in this study :
1. How is the effect of integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales on children's story comprehension?
1-1. How is the effect of integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales on children's structural story comprehension?
1-2. How is the effect of integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales on children's inferential story comprehension?
2. How is the effect of integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales on children's safety competence?
2-1. How is the effect of integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales on children's safety knowledge?
2-2. How is the effect of integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales on children's problem-solving capabilities?
The subjects of this study were 40 four-year-old children enrolled in two classes of S Kindergarten in J City, Jeollabuk-do. The kindergarten's daily schedule for children consists of activities based on life-related themes presented in the national kindergarten curriculum. During the experiments for this study, the children in the experimental group were given safety education through integrated activities using fairy tales. Those in the comparison group were also given safety education on the same themes and content, but the safety education activities for this group were centered on the use of pictures during story discussion time.
For testing the children's story comprehension levels, this study employed a tool which was originally developed by Rand (1991) in accordance with Morrow's story comprehension testing criteria (1984), and revised for use in Korea by Yu Eun-hye (2000).
For safety knowledge testing, this study used Kwak Eun-bok's test tool (2000a), after making some modifications to it so that it could meet the research purpose. Kwak's tool itself was a revised version of the original one used by Pickle (1989) in the "Safety Education Program."
For testing children's problem-solving capabilities, this study selected a tool used by Kwak Eun-bok (2000a), which was a revised version of what Scott (1992) used in the "Prevention injury: A safety curriculum for preschool-kindergarten." Before being used, this tool also underwent revision and complementary work so that it could meet the purpose of this study.
This study was conducted from May 10, 2010 through Feb. 21, 2011 in the following order: literature study, development of integrated activities for safety education using fairy tales, preliminary testing, tester and teacher training, pre-testing, experiments, post-testing, and data analysis.
Experiments for this study were carried out for 11 weeks from Oct. 4, 2010 to Dec. 18, 2010. Eleven fairy tales selected for the safety education were read to children during the period, one tale per week. Fairy tale reading was followed by three types of relevant integrated activities. The data collected for this study were analyzed by using the SPSS/PC 16.0 program. For verification of the main research questions, independent sample t-tests were administered to compare the groups on differences between pre-test and post-test.
This study produced the following results:
First, integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales were effective in enhancing children's structural and inferential story comprehension. Specifically, the activities helped improve the children's structural and inferential story comprehension in relation to the characters, background, theme, order of solutions, and episodes.
Second, integrated activities using safety content of fairy tales were effective in improving children's safety knowledge and problem-solving capabilities. Specifically, the activities helped improve the children's safety knowledge about walking, getting in cars, play facilities, playing sports, sexual violence, environmental contamination, dangerous things and places, and plants. The activities also helped enhance the children's problem-solving capabilities in relation to walking, getting in cars, natural disasters, kidnapping, dangerous things and places, and animals.
These results showed that safety education using fairy tales helps improve young children's story comprehension as well as their safety capabilities. Thus, it is important to select fairy tales with proper themes associated with safety knowledge and problem-solving capabilities. To conclude, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of safety education through integrated activities conducted at opportune times by using fairly tales with suitable safety content in relation to the children's age and developmental stage.
