The indoor environmental conditions affect human health directly because people spend most of their life time in indoor environments such as apartments, shopping malls, and public buildings. Therefore, the concerns over the indoor air quality and the demand for the artificial air conditioning and filtration are rapidly increasing as people pay attention to the environmental diseases.
When we use air filtration for reducing aerosol concentrations in indoors, airborne microorganisms are deposited on filters and cause various side effects such as producing rank odors and re-suspending of bacterial and fungal spore bioaerosols into the indoor air. A variety of methods such as using silver nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, natural antimicrobial extract products, and artificial ion emission have been suggested to solve the microbial contamination problems of air filters.
In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial effect of hybrid stimuli of artificial unipolar ion emission and natural antimicrobial extract products on bioaerosols deposited on filters. We provided artificial unipolar ions to air filters which were treated with antimicrobial natural extract products and investigated the variation of the antimicrobial efficiency of filters due to additional artificial ion emissions. We used Ethanolic mukdenra rossii(oliv) as natural antimicrobial extract material and artificial positive and negative unipolar ions for ion treatments on air filters. For the antimicrobial test, we used Staphylococcus epidermidis as a representative of airborne environmental bacterial bioaerosols. Experimental results demonstrate that the artificial ion emission can enhance the antimicrobial function of air filters treated with natural extract products.
