This paper proposes a controller that is based on adaptive CPG (Central Pattern Generator) and studies an improving method of gait stabilization for a biped walking robot. Because CPG controller results in proper self-regulation exercise against random disturbances when it is applied, usability of CPG is to be excellent in neural network oscillator control(neuron oscillator) for human joint that uses efficient relationship among human neuron, muscle and muscular skeleton system as a basic driving algorithm. But, many repeating calculations and long operation time are required to completely perform a walking gait due to its establishment of related parameters and corresponding setup of the relationship. The proposed new CPG controller decides more practical and immediately attainable parameters for driving a bipedal walking robot from a large number of relational parameters and calculations. It increases system performance and superiority of speed.
Stability is one of the most important aspects of biped walking robot. It is required to generate a walking pattern that joins the center of mass (CoM) and the center of pressure (CoP) or the zero moment point (ZMP). To obtain model and algorithm of stabilized walking, initially the complex multi-link of the bipedal walking robot is simply modeled into a system that has 3 links and 3 masses. Then, links between joints of the simplified model are controlled using torques those are calculated using Newton-Euler’s equation for all joints.
By checking movement of the center of mass of the walking robot, it is verified using loadcells that the robot follows proper walking trajectory. It also accomplishes proper ZMP trajectory by applying ZMP stability criteria with tilting method that ensures walking stability by comparing weight transition with the previous ZMP position. For tilting, an area method is used for biped walking robot trajectory to keep a stable gait.
After executing stable walking by studying possible walking trajectory using neural network learning method with back propagation algorithm, comparison between the trajectory data of tilted walk and the previous calculated tilting data with CPG controller using feed-forward parameters.
Finally, joint velocities, joint angles and parameters those are related to the mass center are substantially obtained during real-time operation of bipedal walking. These data are acquired and compared by implementing adaptive CPG controller, which uses previous tilting feedback results into the current CPG controller.
