Under the topic of "Analysis of Correlations between the Educational Content about Classical Poetry in High School and the Item Content about Classical Poetry in the College Scholastic Ability Tests," this study was formulated to analyze correlations between the two and to figure out instructional content in school and why the students struggle with classical poetry items on college scholastic ability tests. Based on correlativity between instructional content about classical poetry and its evaluation content in the items of college scholastic ability tests, this study also aimed to identify problems and search for possible solutions.
For those purposes, the study first examined the present instructional content of classical poetry in curriculums and predicted the future instructional content of classical poetry based on the Seventh Curriculum currently in act. Next, the study carried out a survey in academic high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province with a questionnaire based on a set of criteria
including "knowledge," "experience," "attitude," and "performance" in order to interpret the instructional content in high school. The study also analyzed items in college scholastic ability tests from 2005 to 2011 based on a set of criteria
including "knowledge," "experience," "attitude," and "performance" to understand the evaluation content of the items about classical poetry. Finally, the study compared and analyzed the instructional content of classical poetry and the evaluation content of it in items in college scholastic ability tests, proposed correlativity between them, identified problems, and searched for improvement measures.
The results showed that the category of "text knowledge" held high importance and correlativity both in instructional content in school and evaluation content in college scholastic ability tests. The category of "context knowledge" was highly important in instructional content but was insignificant in evaluation content shown in college scholastic ability tests, thus displayed a very low level of correlativity. The category of "meta- knowledge," contrary to that of "context knowledge," was not important in instructional content but claimed high importance in evaluation content in college scholastic ability tests, which recorded an average level of correlativity. The category of "experience" was handled with great importance in instructional content but with less importance in evaluation content, thus recorded a low level of correlativity. The categories of "attitude" and "performance" recorded a low level both in instructional and evaluation content, therefore, being subject to neither instructional nor evaluation category.
Those results indicate that the students experienced difficulty with classical poetry items in college scholastic ability tests because correlativity between its instructional content and evaluation content is low. The difference between them was 43%, 38%, and 27% in "context knowledge," "experience," and "meta-knowledge," respectively. Another problem identified was that instructional content in school and evaluation content in college scholastic ability tests were heavily inclined towards certain areas without even distribution. The problem with the inclination towards one area was considered serious especially with the "attitude" and "performance" categories that are hardly covered.
To solve these problems, first, teachers need to focus on "meta-knowledge" more than "context knowledge" when teaching classical poetry in school. Second, teachers should help students realize the modern significance of classical poems and form their own "attitudes" by internalizing the significance in education of classical poetry. Third, teachers should recognize that "performance" activities provide a chance for better appreciation of works, and teachers should allocate more time on them in the education of classical poetry in school. Fourth, the items about classical poetry in college scholastic ability tests should reflect various content items in assessment in addition to "context knowledge" and "meta-knowledge." Finally, the types of classical poetry items in college scholastic ability tests should be diversified, and new types of items should be developed on an ongoing basis.
