Modern society has faced up a severe environmental crisis, namely an ecologic crisis. The reason why environmental problems have not been effectively settled down and occurred worldwide seems to be related to: (1) people's insufficient understanding of the problems; and (2) the obscure prospect to the level of future disaster mankind has to face up in the future. When taking the fact that most of environmental problems have been caused by human beings into account, it is natural to call on that all the members in the global community must be the main body of solving the problems. In particular, it is important for the youth as the owner of future generations to convert their perception into that they are the main body of environment. The strategy for the conversion of perception and problem-solving must be groped after from the new paradigm-oriented environmental philosophy and education. With this critical mind, the investigator argues that the cause of environmental crisis is not the simple material pollution but the fundamental pollution of human consciousness, and 'the environmental crisis for the present is the problem of society as well as the crisis of human beings.' In addition, as alternative theories that can diagnose and solve these problems, the investigator pays attention to Arne Naess' 'deep ecology environmental philosophy', a radical idea of ecology, and John Miller's 'holistic environmental education.' The environmental philosophy for the future must be a practical philosophy that does not remain in the dimension of nature, perception and ecology, but critically takes actions to the anti-environmental consciousness from the dimension of education. In this vein, the investigator additionally examined the applicability of environmental philosophy to the settlement of environmental problems occurred in domestic society, together with the desirable direction of environmental education. The existing education at domestic middle and high schools only understands human beings as the ones who are separated from nature fundamentally and has anthropocentric standpoints that regard human beings as superior ones to nature. On the other hand, Arne Naess' deep ecology environmental philosophy and John Miller's holistic environmental education basically understand human beings in association with nature. With these standpoints, the investigator diagnosed environmental education again and examined problems and alternatives. In order words, the investigator suggested that a fundamental alternative strategy of overcoming environmental crisis had to be sought in the following two directions that based on the new paradigm environmental philosophy derived from the change of values and life modalities of middle and high school students, the main body of environmental education: First, via theoretical education, it is necessary to make them have a new value system with which they can pursue the harmony between man and nature and restore the dignity of life, thus perceiving a correct relativity between man and nature. Second, it is necessary to make them have firsthand environmental experience-oriented ecologic perception. In this regard, the direction of this study was to analyze the problems of environmental education in association with 'Arne Naess' deep ecology environmental philosophy' and 'John Miller's holistic environmental education' and examine the cause of severance of connectivity with the effects of experiential environment education carried out in elementary schools, as they were going to schools of higher grade, focusing on systematic problems. In addition, by analyzing environment curricula and experiential learning programs, an alternative to the experiential environment education that could be carried out at middle and high schools was groped after based on Arne Naess' deep ecology environmental philosophy. The ultimate aim of this study was to examine the performance of environmental education, make students perceive the necessity of experiential ecologic education in the future, carry out nature preservation-based experiential ecologic education, and grope after the possibility of conversion of human life into the ecologic value-centered one. The core of this study was to argue that the environmental education in the scene of schools had to be carried out on the basis of deep ecology and holistic ecology. Via theoretical examination and concrete investigation of data, the investigator concluded that the current environmental education at middle and high schools is anthropocentric environmental education on which reflected techno-centrism and positivism and the practical experiential learning is difficult to carry out due to entrance exam-oriented school education. As a new alternative strategy that can settle down these problems, therefore, the deep ecology theory and the holistic environmental education are necessary, together with sufficient theoretical grounds. Since the environmental crisis has originated from human beings, generated problems seem to be brought to the conclusion that how the limitation of human beings is accepted. From the aspect of presenting a philosophical base on which man is not a main body of intervening in nature and of judging it, but a living body and a part of nature only, the deep ecology can be applied to educational scenes practically. Such a diagnosis as the interlock of scientific development, technology application-oriented material affluence and man's gratification of unlimited desire transforms nature and this manipulation of nature is resulted in environmental destruction can provide a crucial clue for prescription. It is doubtful whether the change of life and destruction of environment, due to man's unlimited pursuit of material desire, can be an ultimate aim of human life. In the destructed nature and industrial culture of which one and only criterion is material, 'the restoration of fundamental reason' via the self-reflection on what we must do and via its educational application can be another prerequisite that changes the condition of life fundamentally. The cultivation of youth's ecology-centered sensitivity, awe for life and life-respect consciousness begins with this diagnosis. Only the self-reflection of life conditions, we pursue, and the environmental education that can cultivate the disposition of self-reflection will prepare transparent conditions for future generations. The deep ecology that presents innate value realization, life respect attitudes and nature-friendly value systems can provide feasible answers to these doubts. The conversion of consciousness through practical environmental education and Naess' ecology-oriented values, small communalism, value-oriented sense of purpose and role of reason that can change life conditions are directly connected to the ultimate happiness of human beings. By quoting the conclusion of Friedrich Schumacher, the author of the book 『Small is Beautiful』 that expresses the thought of ecology well, the investigator wants to conclude this study. "The thing that can rescue human beings is neither science nor technology. It must be man's returning to the humanistic and mental wisdom that have been handed down for a long time. It means that man must humbly accept such truth that he is a part of nature which is bigger than him and his complete life can be maintained within his harmonious relationship with nature." In addition, since the backgrounds of most of discussions on environmental ethics are Western environmental consciousness and tradition, the theoretical background of this study also consisted of Occidental discussion systems. With it, we can face up the problem of how Oriental values can graft onto it. In this vein, it is necessary to grope after methodological possibility that does not lose the universality of environmental ethics and harmonizes with Oriental world view. Since preceding studies or experiential environment learning models for the systematized environmental philosophy and environmental education have not been established so far, this study's discussion on these aspects seems to be an alternative attempt.
