The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of backyard gardening activities on food habit and unbalanced diets of young children. Study subjects were 33 boys and girls aged 3 and 4 who belonged to 'K' kindergarten in Si-heung and they participated in backyard gardening activities for 13 weeks(twice a week). The comparison group consisted of 32 boys and girls aged 3 and 4 who belonged to the same kindergarten as the trial group and just went out for a walk or did outside activities not involving backyard gardening activities. This study used the methods developed by Kim Eun-hee(2004) to measure children's food habits, while their unbalanced diets were measured against the check-list developed by Choi Myoung-joo and modified by Kim Joo-Min. To find the consistency of improving eating habits and ill-balanced diets, every homeroom teacher checked the children who had ill balanced diet at lunch time. The study findings are as follows: First, children in the trial group presented an average increase in all three sub-variables of food habits. And they also presented a significant difference in all sub-variables such as 'hygiene awareness', 'table manner' and 'eating attitude' from the comparison group. Thus, the presented food habit of children were changed by backyard gardening activity. Second, backyard gardening activities positively affected the children's unbalanced diets. The trial group showed a significant difference from the comparison group. Third, the improved food habits and ill balanced diets showed consistent improvement through out their lunch times in the kindergarten. In conclusion, backyard gardening activities provided help for the children to positively change their food habits, unbalanced diets and also the consistency of these. This point suggests that various backyard gardening activities should be introduced into the children's education field in order to bring about desirable changes in children's food habits and ill-balanced diets.
