As the interests of lesson regarding like reading, writing, listening, has increased, a variety of studies have been actively conducted to develop strategies during lesson focused on promoting reading comprehension. Few studies, however, have been made to explore the effects of auditory and visual memory of sentences on reading comprehension. The purpose of this study is to examine the difference between auditory and visual memory of sentences, the difference of auditory and visual memory of sentences depending on each grade, and interrelation of the auditory and visual memory of sentences with reading comprehension.
Subjects of this study were 10 first and second graders of normal condition who were enrolled in the ‘after-school program’ run by Daejeon Composite Social Welfare Center. To test auditory memory of the children, they were told of 16 sentences directly by the researcher in advance and asked to repeat the same from memory. In addition, to test their visual memory, children were directed to read 16 sentences with eyes only and to repeat the same after reading. Also, they were given comprehension test, including lower items of the testing instrument to check their basic academic abilities to rate their comprehension abilities and the abilities to understand sentences and reply to the questions correctly. An analysis was conducted to investigate the difference between auditory and visual memory of sentences and the relation between memory of sentences and reading comprehension.
The findings from the study include the following:
First, more points of the auditory memory than the visual one, with a significant difference, were found in the surveyed children.
Second, second graders scored higher points in both auditory and visual memories compared to the first graders, but that was not stastistically significant.
Third, higher auditory memory was well correlated with higher visual memory (r=.74).
Fourth, the relationship coefficient for auditory memory of sentences and reading comprehension was r=.60 but the coefficient for interrelationship between visual memory of sentences and reading comprehension was r=.82, a fact evidencing that reading comprehension is improved if one has good visual memory of sentences and that reading comprehension is more related to visual memory than to auditory memory of sentences.
This study contributes to provide fundamental data useful for developing programs for children to exercise with promoting their auditory and visual memory through improving their reading comprehension.
