Purpose: Deficiencies in temporary processing and information storing abilities that are related to working memory can make it difficult to solve cognitive tasks such as learning, understanding and reasoning. In particular, in individuals with hearing impairment, the working memory ability to process information is degraded due to the lack of auditory information. Additionally, tasks that are related to working memory are included as an essential component of auditory rehabilitation. Recently, a Repeat and Recall Test (Slugocki et al., 2018) has been developed to measure working memory capabilities along with sentence recognition tests in clinical trials, which assesses the hearing and working memory abilities of hearing-impaired people, provides customized intervention programs, and is used in clinical trials. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the sentence recall performance in normal hearing adults by using Korean Standard-Sentence Lists for Adults (KS-SL-A) (Jang et al., 2008) and Matrix Sentence Test (Kim & Lee, 2018) in order to provide basic data for the clinical application of a working memory task to the hearing-impaired individuals.
Methods: In order to use the sentence recall test tool to examine working memory ability, three, four, and five sentences were reconstructed according to the number of sentences from the 10 sentences lists provided by the KS-SL-A, where the number of target words were 10, 15, and 20, respectively. The Matrix Sentence Test sentences were divided into two, three, four, and five sentences, and the target words in these sentences were 10, 15, 20, and 25, respectively. The sentence recall test was conducted in a format in which the subject listened to each sentence from the speaker and repeated it, and then recalled the sentence heard after 15 seconds in any order. The correct response rate for each sentence was counted as a number of successful recalls of the target words in percentages. In addition, the KS-SL-A list equivalence and error types were analyzed, and the matrix test results were measured in terms of sequence position effect and error rate of the speech parts. In order to verify the reliability of the sentence recall test, the correlation between the reading span task and the digit span task was compared.
Results: The results of the KS-SL-A sentence recall test according to the number of sentences showed that as the number of sentences increased, the performance was significantly lower at 88.8~64.58%. There were significant differences between all sentences. As the number of sentences increased from three, to four, and to five sentences, the number of target words increased to 10, 15, and 20, respectively; however, the number of positive responses averaged at 8, 11, 12 for the three, four, and five sentences, respectively. By checking the equivalency of the difficulty level of lists, it was found that there were no significant differences between lists, except for list 1 and list 3 in the three-sentences. The results of the Matrix sentence recall test showed a performance of 73.33±16.90% in two-sentence condition, 49.25±14.94% in the three-sentence condition, 35±13.47% in the four-sentence condition, and 39.89±12.15% in the five-sentence condition. And, as the number of sentences increased from 2 to 4 sentences or more, the performance ability was significantly lower. As a result of examining the differences in performance by presentation order within the sentences, the last sentence in every number of sentences’ conditions showed significantly higher performance compared to other sentences. In both sentence recall tests, the correlation with the digit span task was not significant, but the reading span task, KS-SL-A three-sentences, and Matrix two-sentences showed significant correlations.
Conclusions: The results of this study showed differences in working memory performance according to sentence types. In both sentence types, the number of sentences increased and the capacity of working memory decreased. Using the three-sentences from the Korean standard sentence test and the two-sentences from the matrix test showed correlation with the reading span task, suggesting that they could be applied clinically to measure working memory.
