Lithium ion batteries have been widely applied as power sources for various electronic devices, such as cameras, mobile phones, notebook, and electric sources for hybrid electric vehicles due to their long life cycle and high energy density. A promising anodic material for Li-ion battery is Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) because of its zero volume change during the charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, it can be more adequate anodic active material for fast-charging than the conventional carbon-based material. Three types of Li sources (Li2CO3 and LiOH) and TiO2 of Ti sources (anatase, rutile / various particle size TiO2) were used as starting materials for the solid-state synthesis of LTO in this study. Based on SEM, XRD, TG/DTA, zeta potential results for the starting materials, Li2CO3 and VK-TA300 TiO2 were chosen as the optimum combination. LTO was synthesized via two different types of milling for the starting materials, such as ball milling and high energy milling in this study. Especially, the effects of mechanochemical activation for starting materials on the solid-state reaction were evaluated using SEM and TGA for VK-TA300 and HT0210 TiO2 + Li2CO3 combinations. After heat-treatment at various temperatures between 600 - 1,000oC, the phase generation and particle properties were evaluated. In addition, the electrochemical properties of the synthesized LTO (especially, for the LTO prepared using VK-TA300 TiO2 + Li2CO3 by both of ball milling and high energy milling) were examined after preparing a coin-type cell (R2032), whereby the maximum capacity of 165.3mAh/g was shown. In conclusion, the mechanochemical activation for the starting materials by high energy milling was shown to be more effective in decreasing the reaction temperature and particle size as well as increasing LTO content than those prepared by ball milling. In addition, it was shown that the smaller particles resulted in better rate properties owing to its shorter diffusion length and large contact area between the active material and electrolyte for lithiation and delithiation than coarse particles.
