Abstract A Study on the Early Gayageum Sanjo -with a special reference to Han Sook-gu School Oh, Kyung-hee Department of Musicology The Graduate School Hanyang University Han Sook-gu is one of the early masters like Kim Chang-jo, Shim Chang-rae and Park Pol-goe who played a very important role in creating the Gayageum Sanjo in the late 19th-century. The early masters composed the key structure of Sanjo with the influence of the established genres such as Sinawee or Pansori. Based upon the original formation of early masters, the 20th-century players formed a variety of styles by adding their unique personality and musical spirits to the original version. The reason why the Gayageum Sanjo became the most popular genre of all the musical ones was because there was the very contemporary musical environment in which players could recognize their musical diversity and exchange one another. Among the early Gayageum Sanjos, Kim Chang-jo school has been mostly performed and studied very actively, whereas other schools has been rarely performed and researched only for transition and preservation. This problematic imbalance of inheriting the early Gayageum Sanjo caused the melody to be stereotyped by its school and is deteriorating the musical diversity. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to examine the background of the formation of the most academically neglected Gayageum sanjo, to analyze three styles of Han Sook-gu school which is currently transmitted and to consolidate the diversity of the Sanjo genre by recomposing the original rhythm. In the second chapter, the musical geneology of Han Sook-gu Sanjo School was examined. Sanjo is well-known to have been formed by the influence of Sinawee and Pansori. The single performing art, Sanjo, was invented by a folk musician who participated in Gutpan-Sinawee and developed by embracing the rhythm and blues of Pansori. Han Sook-gu is 16 year older than Kim Chang-jo and he had taught his disciples by the early 1930s. The period of his active performance is one from the beginning of Sanjo through the formation of basic movement to making Deonum by styles. It could be suggested, therefore, that Han Sook-gu started his Gayageum Sanjo in the primitive form and developed it into the contemporary structure and rhythm which we are now playing. The current school of Han Sook-gu Gayageum Sanjo consists of the three representative schools such as Seo Gong-cheol school, Cheong Nam-hee school and Cheong Dal-young school. It was examined that Seo Gong-cheol learned from Han Sook-gu and Cheong Nam-ok, Cheong Nam-hee did from Ahn Gi-ok who followed Han Sook-gu and Cheong Dal-young did from Cheong Nam-ok who followed Han Sook-gu. The next chapter analyzes comparatively Seo Gong-cheol school, Cheong Nam-hee school and Cheong Dal-young school in order to restore the original rhythm and melody of Han Sook-gu Gayageum Sanjo and to find out the common factors of melody. First, the identity and difference in the melody out of the three schools is analyzed and the identity and difference between the two schools is examined by movements. As a result, this study finds out the fact that the common melody number of the three schools originating from Han Sook-gu school is not so many comparing to the number of each school's total rhythm of movement. The Naderum melody of each movement turns out to be the common melody. This study also finds out that the common melody between the two schools comes mostly from Seo Gong-cheol and Cheong Nam-hee up to 40% by each movement. On the other hand, the common melody of Seo Gong-cheol and Cheong Dal-young is relatively small and in the case of Cheong Dal-young and Cheong Nam-hee is rare. It can be concluded, therefore, that Seo Gong-cheol school and Cheong Nam-hee school has more original rhythm and molody of Han Sook-gu Gayageum Sanjo than Cheong Dal-young school. In the last chapter, this study recomposed, by movement, the Han Sook-gu Gayageum Sanjo which is restored out of the analysis and examination of the three schools. The original rhythms and melodies of Han Sook-gu school of Gayageum Sanjo restored from Seo Gong-cheol school are Jinyanjo 69, Jungmori 49, Jungjungmori 12, Jajinmori 45. This study finds out that the early formation of Han Sook-gu Gayageum Sanjo we could assume out of its original rhythm and melody has already the elementary matrix of Jinyanjo-Jungmori-Jungjungmori-Jajinmori. This study also confirms that the three different sanjos exchange actively each other since they are very similar to the sanjos which has different kinds of Naderum melody. Especially the fact that Jinyangjo is composed of Ujo-Doljang-Geymyunjo and that Gyungderum is commoly played in the Jungmori, demonstrates that the Han Sook-gu Gayageum Sanjo is stereotyped in his contemporary and its rhythm and melody have been transmitted by schools. In conclusion, since Han Sook-gu is regarded as one of the early masters, his Gayageum Sanjo is mostly assumed to have musical characteristics of Sinawee. Analyzing the three schools of Han Sook gu School, however, this study newly confirms that his Sanjo is already basically formatted in his contemporary. This research concludes that Han Sook-gu as well as Kim Chang-jo, as a herald, contributes to understanding the diversity of transmitting history of Gayageum Sanjo.
