The purpose of this study was to comparatively analyze the melodies of gayageum chorus between Park Gwi-hui and Jeong Dal-yeong Schools, focusing on Nokeumbangcho. For this, both schools' lyrics and melodies were comparatively analyzed through two master singer's records. As study methods, the content of lyrics of Nokeumbangcho by Park Gwi-hui and Jeong Dal-yeong was divided by maru and then analyzed it, since the content of lyrics of the song was easy to be examined. In order to comparatively analyze melodies, this study used staff notation and then wrote musical scores using the real sound of both sound-sources, since staff notation was easy to be examined. In addition, Nokeumbangcho by Park Gwi-hui and Jeong Dal-yeong was written down by jungmori 3/𝅘𝅥 in a jangdan. Used sound sources were the first track of the record 『Human Cultural Asset (Gayageum Chorus) Park Gwi-hui, 1990. 01. 01, Jigu Records』 as Park Gwi-hui's song and the 13th track of the record 『Korean Traditional Music Series (34), the Collection of Deceased Master Singer's Songs, Planned by KBS FM and Owned by KBS, 2004. 03』 as Jeong Dal-yeong's song. Study findings are as follows:
First, the lyrics of Nokeumbangcho were compared between Park Gwi-hui of Oh Tae-seok school and Jeong Dal-yeong of Jeong Nam-ok school. The lyrics and main contents of two singer's song were very similar. The lyrics of Park Gwi-hui consisted of 6 marus, whereas those of Jeong Dal-yeong consisted of 5 marus. So the lyrics of Park Gwi-hui were a little longer. From the first to third maru, both singers used the lyrics of a short song , and in the third, fourth and sixth maru, a short song was used.
Second, based on the lyrics of both singers' Nokeumbangcho, melodies were examined. Both singers were similar in melodies, but except such similar parts as the whole progress of melodies, sound range and sigimsae, both singers presented independent progress of melodies. Doing like that, they expressed their lyrics more effectively. Although their schools are different and they used independent progress of melodies, both singers used similar sigimsae or melodic progress in certain lyrics. In other words, both singers sing with completely different progress of melodies, but their song has similar parts.
Third, based on the sounds of both singers' Nokeumbangcho, the musical scale was organized. Results showed that their musical scale was re-mi-sol-la-do, which is corresponding to pyeongjo. In particular, it ended with sol like the pyeongjo scale of pansori. In other words, Nokeumbangcho has such a 5-sound scale as re-mi-sol-la-do and a sol-mode which ends with sol.
Fourth, Jeong Dal-yeong's Nokeumbangcho consisted of 37 jungmori jangdans with ♩≒85 tempo. From 20th jangdan to 23rd jangdan, gayageum solo was performed. And then to the final 37th jangdan, gayageum chorus was performed. On the other hand, Park Gwi-hui's Nokeumbangcho consisted of 60 jungmori jangdans with ♩≒110 tempo, and therefore a little quicker than that of Jeong Dal-yeong. From 44th jangdan to 45th jangdan, gayageum solo was performed. And then from 46th jangdan to the final 60th jangdan, gayageum chorus was performed.
Fifth, the Nokeumbangcho of Park Gwi-hui and Jeong Dal-yeong Schools used same melodies but has an independent melodic structure. Nevertheless, in certain lyrics, melodic connectivity is presented. In this vein, two singers seem to have connectivity and their connectivity seems to derive from their musical connectivity. The author interprets this connectivity deriving from the fact that both singers had a genealogically common teacher Oh Tae-seok, and Jeong Dal-yeong changed his song creatively and independently. However, to reach this conclusion only with one song Nokeumbangcho seems to be problematic. Therefore, the author hopes many follow-up studies on the development of gayageum chorus of Park Gwi-hui and Jeong Dal-yeong Schools will be carried out in the future.
