There has been a growing interest and concern for the teaching of listening in the second language classroom over the last several decades. Even though it is a foundational skill in acquiring a second language, it was initially ignored as the least important ability among the four learning skills. However, as communication ability becomes more important, listening skill is considered one of the most essential skills that EFL learners have to basically achieve. According to its increasing importance, many researchers and teachers have explored the most effective ways to teach listening. One of the suggestions is providing background knowledge or structural organization regarding on spoken messages (Anderson & Lynch, 1988; Brown & Yule, 1983; Dunkel & Davis, 1994; Rost, 1990; Schmidt-Rinehart, 1994).

According to its increasing importance, many researchers and teachers have explored the most effective ways to teach listening. In the past, as a matter of fact, Korean EFL students in the listening classroom were often required to listen to the target material once and answer questions without being provided with any listening training or supports. In situations like these, it was easy for students to feel overwhelmed, confused, and distracted from attaining a successful listening ability. In the light of these situations, this study explored one of the effective ways to teach listening by decreasing students' listening anxiety.
The present study measured the effects of content schemata and formal schemata on Korean EFL learners' listening comprehension and anxiety. In order to reach a conclusion, this study was focused on two approaches using three groups, a content schema group, a formal schema group, and a control group. Firstly, the effects of the content schema and formal schema group according to different types of questions were dealt with. There were 3 different types of questions: the main idea, specific information, and inference types of questions. For the main idea questions, the three groups showed better performances in the posttest than in the pretest. However, there were differences between specific information and inference types of questions. The scores of the content schema and the formal schema groups increased after schema-building activation for both types of questions. On the contrary, the control group showed an irregular changes in both types of questions. This suggests that the content and formal schemata are helpful for different types of questions, especially the specific information and inference-type questions. Secondly, the effects of content and formal schema according to different types of listening texts were investigated. There were two different types of listening texts: dialogue and narrative. Increased performances were shown for both dialogue and narrative types of questions after schema-building activities. More specifically, the content schema group showed a better performance in the dialogue-type question and the formal schema group scored better in the narrative-type question.
In order to see the differences between listening anxiety before and after schema-building activation, Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Survey (FLLAS) was performed before and after the main experiment. The levels of participants' listening anxiety decreased after the two schema activities were used in both experimental groups. While the formal schema group showed a lower degree of anxiety in the posttest, the degree of the control group's anxiety increased in the posttest.
To reflect students' perceptions toward English listening, four open-ended questions were added to the post-anxiety survey. Even though most of the students felt that English listening is one of the most important parts of learning a second language, they do not know the best ways to study it and find the most effective ways of listening to spoken English.
It is assumed that this study provides teachers and students with many implications for SLA. In order to enhance students' listening comprehension ability, teachers should use a wide variety of schema activities in the classroom and provide them with the appropriate levels of schemata. Moreover, teachers have to make use of various genres of listening texts according to the listening purposes.

한국과 같은 EFL(English as a Foreign Language) 상황에서 제 2언어 학습자들은 영어를 학습함에 있어 여러 가지 부정적인 요인들 때문에 많은 어려움에 직면해오고 있다. 특히, 듣기의 까다로운 특성, 즉, 빠른 속도, 모르는 단어, 익숙하지 않은 억양, 다양한 발음, 친숙하지 않은 주제들은 학습자들의 성공적인 듣기 학습에 방해가 되고 있다. 대부분의 EFL 상황에서 듣기 학습자들은 이러한 방해 요소들에 대한 사전 학습이 이루어지지 않고, 곧바로 듣기 지문을 듣고 문제를 푸는 형태의 수업에 참여하고 있으며, 이로 인해 학습자들은 듣기에 대한 부담감에 시달리고, 이는 곧 듣기 불안을 야기하고 있다. 제 2언어 학습의 궁극적인 목적인 의사소통 능력을 성취함에 있어 듣기가 필수적으로 선행되어야 하는 요소인 점을 감안해 보았을 때, 듣기는 제 2언어 학습자들이 반드시 극복해야 할 과제이다. 그래서 지금까지 제 2 언어학자들 사이에서 듣기 전 활동 (pre-listening supports)에 대한 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있다.
본 연구에서는 2개의 서로 다른 듣기 전 활동인 내용스키마와 형식스키마 활동이 한국 EFL 학습자들의 듣기 이해와 듣기 불안에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다. 연구대상은 광주시 M남고 109명의 중위 그룹 학생들이며, 이들은 내용스키마 그룹, 형식스키마 그룹, 그리고 통제 그룹으로 나뉘었다. 내용스키마 그룹의 학생들은 약 3분 동안 주제에 해당되는 영상을 본 뒤, 주제에 관해 자신의 생각이나 경험 등을 질문하고 답하도록 5분의 시간이 주어졌고, 내용스키마 활동이 끝난 뒤, 이들은 약 5분 동안 지문에 해당되는 어휘 활동을 하였다. 이 어휘 활동은 세 그룹 ― 내용스키마 집단, 형식스키마 집단, 그리고 통제 집단 ― 에게 동일하게 가해지는 처치로써, 이 어휘 활동은 학생들의 듣기 지문에 대한 인지적, 심리적인 부담감을 덜어주고자 하는 목적으로 사용되었다. 형식스키마 집단은 약 3분 동안 수사학적인 구조를 연구자와 함께 공부 한 뒤, 약 5분 동안 짝을 지어 해당 듣기 지문의 수사학적 구조를 알아내는 활동을 하였다. 이 그룹도 내용스키마 그룹과 마찬가지로, 스키마 활동이 끝나고 약 5분 동안 어휘 활동을 하였다. 통제 그룹에게는 스키마 활동은 주어지지 않았으나, 내용스키마 집단과 형식스키마 집단과 같이 어휘 활동이 똑같이 주어졌고, 나머지 8분 동안 미국에서 인기 있는 재미있는 광고 영상을 보았다.
본 연구에서는, 첫 번째로, 2개의 서로 다른 스키마가 다른 문제 유형 ― 주제고르기, 특정 정보 알아내기, 유추하기 ― 에 미치는 영향, 두 번째로, 2개의 서로 다른 스키마가 다른 지문 유형 ― 대화 형태의 지문, 담화 형태의 지문 ― 에 미치는 영향, 세 번째로, 두 개의 서로 다른 스키마가 학습자들의 듣기 불안에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였으며, 듣기 후 불안 설문지에는 듣기 학습이나, 본 수업에서 하였던 듣기 활동에 대한 학생들의 의견을 반영하는 주관식 문제를 추가시켰다.
먼저, 실험은 총 5주에 걸쳐 실시되었고, 첫 번째 주에는 사전 듣기 평가와 사전 듣기 불안 설문이 이루어졌고, 사전 듣기 평가 결과로 One-way ANOVA 분석을 통해 세 집단의 동질성을 확인하였다. 두 번째 주, 세 번째 주, 그리고 네 번째 주에는 각 각 한 개의 듣기 지문에 대한 스키마 활동과 듣기 평가가 이루어졌으며, 다섯 번째 주에는 마지막 듣기 지문과 사후 듣기 불안 설문이 이루어졌다. 사전 점수와 사후 점수간의 상관성이 스키마 활동에 영향을 미치지 않게 사전 점수를 covariate로 처리하여 수집된 자료는 ANCOVA로 분석되었다.
먼저 문제 유형별 분석에서, 주제 고르는 문제에서는 세 집단의 점수가 모두 향상되었고, 특정 정보 문제와 유추 문제에서는 두 실험 집단의 점수가 향상된 것을 보인 반면, 통제 집단은 특정 정보 고르기 문제에서는 점수가 떨어졌으나, 유추하기 문제에서는 점수가 살짝 상승함을 보였다. 두 번째로, 지문 유형별 분석에서, 대화(dialogue) 형태의 지문에서는 내용스키마 집단이, 담화(narrative) 형태의 지문에서는 형식스키마 집단이 우세함을 보였다. 하지만, 통제집단의 경우, 대화 형태의 지문에서는 점수가 향상된 반면, 담화 형태의 지문에서는 점수가 하락되는 등 불규칙한 변화를 보였다. 세 번째로, 듣기 불안에 대한 분석에서, 두 개의 실험집단은 사전 듣기 불안에 비해 스키마 활동 이후 이루어진 사후 듣기 불안에서 불안 정도가 감소함을 보였으며, 그 중에서도 형식스키마 집단의 불안 정도가 더 감소함을 보였다. 지문의 수사학적인 구조를 직접적으로 학습하였다는 점에서 형식스키마 집단의 불안 정도가 더 많이 감소하였음을 유추할 수 있다. 이에 반해, 통제 집단의 불안 정도는 오히려 증가하였다. 친숙하지 않은 주제, 평소 듣기 지문과는 다른 장문의 듣기, 어려운 단어 등이 통제 집단의 학습자로 하여금 불안을 야기한 것으로 보인다. 마지막으로, 듣기, 듣기 수업, 본 수업에서 사용된 활동 등에 대한 생각을 물어보는 질문에서 학생들의 듣기에 대한 공통적인 생각은 ‘어렵다’, ‘어떻게 공부해야 할지 모르겠다’ 등이었고, 본 수업에서 사용된 활동에 대한 생각에서는, ‘색다르다’, ‘더 잘 들린다’, ‘이렇게 듣기 수업하면 듣기 성적이 오를 것 같다’ 등의 의견을 나타내었다.
이상의 분석으로, 본 연구에서는 두 개의 서로 다른 스키마가 학생들의 듣기 이해와 듣기 불안에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 결과를 이끌어냈고, 특히 ‘특정 정보 고르기‘ 문제의 경우 스키마의 영향을 더 많이 받는 것으로 알 수 있었으며, 대화(dialogue) 형태의 지문에서는 배경지식을 투여하는 것이, 담화 형태 (narrative)의 장문 듣기에서는 수사학적인 구조를 노출시키는 것이 더 효과적인 것으로 알 수 있었다.
실험의 대상이 모두 남학생이었다는 점, 장기간에 걸쳐 연구되지 않았다는 본 연구의 한계에도 불구하고, 제 2언어 학습의 궁극적인 목적인 의사소통 능력을 성취함에 있어 듣기가 말하기에 선행한다는 주장에 따라, 학습자들의 듣기 이해 능력을 향상시키고 듣기 불안을 감소시키기 위한 노력의 일환으로, 본 연구의 결과는 한국과 같은 EFL 상황에 있는 교사와 학생들에게 교육학적인 시사점과 듣기 수업에 대한 적절한 방향을 제시해주고 있다. 본 연구에서는 두 개의 스키마만 적용되었으나, 상황과 지문의 특성에 따라 다른 스키마가 적용될 경우에도 학습자들의 듣기 이해 능력 신장에 큰 도움이 될 것으로 보인다.
