Recently, with the improvement of living standard and the implementation of a five-day workweek, the cultural demand of the masses increases gradually. In order to cope with this demand, cultural circles have developed interesting and beneficial contents continuously. As an assembly of culture, museums also have been quick in dealing with this stream. The introduction of advanced industrial technology and diversely developed experiential education programs provide visitors abundant knowledge, wonder and amusement. According to this trend, the themes of museum exhibition have been diversified as well. Thus, museums attract people with fresh and interesting themes according to their aim of establishment. However, one regrettable thing is that many of museums cannot free from the selection of themes yet. Most of museums choose not to visualize (objectify) intangible inheritances but to adopt tangible inheritance-based themes. It is a counterevidence that most of museums only deal with themes that are easy to secure three-dimensional inheritances and they are very passive in the development and attempt of new techniques of exhibition as a method of presentation. Intangible inheritances exist in a variety of forms, such as music, dance, drama, martial art, ritual and play. However, the selection of these kinds of intangible inheritances as the theme of exhibition has been extremely rare so far. On this account, the investigator examined the possibility of museum exhibition of intangible inheritances, focusing on Arirang. For this, the investigator looked into the theoretical approach to Arirang, the current status of its regional inheritance, the analysis of its exhibition cases and suggestions for it, and the use strategy of themes of intangible inheritance in exhibition. Arirang is a representative of orally transmitted folk songs. Since it has been handed down mouth-to-mouth, it is difficult to find out the time and background of its origin accurately. Nevertheless, academic circles have studied the etymology and true nature of Arirang continuously since the 1930s. The key words of those studies are classified into repairing of Gyeongbokgung, Japanese colonial era, Kim San, Na Un-gyu, the Independence Army, the Korean War, diaspora, North Korea, 88 Seoul Olympics and 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and they seemed to be the contraction of modern and contemporary history of Korea. To classify it by key words of chronicle, results seem to be the same with the above classification. To classify it by lyrics and narrations, Arirang is different by the situations of countries, regions and individuals and exists in a variety of forms, such as art (music, movie, drama and performance) and literature (fiction and poetry). If Arirang is used as a theme of exhibition, therefore, it is necessary to select themes and genres that accord with museum's aim of establishment and clearly present the intent of exhibition planners via selected themes. In addition, the intent of planners must be clearly reflected on the exhibition via relics and texts. For this, it is necessary to introduce interpretation media with which visitors can understand easily and feel interests in the exhibition of Arirang. The interpretation media, mentioned here, are label-oriented texts (that explain exhibition intents, departments and relics), experiential elements and various contents-contained visuals. To make visitors understand intangible elements and completely deliver Arirang's emotional elements to them, the above media seem to be more effective than the direct explanation of relics. In addition, the fundamental of Arirang is in hearing. On this account, its sound source can be a most important material of exhibition. In the realization of Arirang, hearing has stronger persuasive power than seeing. People's bond of sympathy will be formed more broadly by firsthand hearing the sound source of Arirang than by seeing its lyrics and musical scores in which musical scales are set. It is because the masses have contacted with Arirang more frequently by hearing than by seeing, In this vein, it seems to be most effective to make visitors hear the old Arirang recorded in actual sites, Bonjo Arirang produced into gramophone record, and creative Arirang sung by many contemporary popular musicians. In addition, three-dimensional relics, derived from sound sources, can be taken into account. Records of Arirang (SP, LP, EP), musical scores and collection of lyrics can be good relics that can stimulate the sense of seeing. Finally, it is necessary to develop exhibition-associated educational programs. Museum education must have its inherent area that could be taught and learned at a museum. Museum education means the education carried out by inserting intangible inheritances into such museum's job-related programs as research, preservation, collection, investigation and exhibition. In this regard, museum's job process-based education on which such themes as the planning process of intangible inheritance-used exhibitions, method of collection of related data, method of recording in a book, realization as an exhibition, direct feeling of duplicates with a hand, and lectures by specialists from academic circles can be taken into account. The education can be a process of consolidating the identity of museums, and students will have a lot of interests and curiosity in the new curricula of museum education. Intangible inheritances, including Arirang, have been presented in voices and actions via various performances and events, but researches on it have been narrowly carried out due to few transmission organizations. The introduction of intangible inheritances into museum exhibition will be a good opportunity of establishing them newly from academic, transmissible and stereotypical aspects. It is because the themes of museum exhibition inherently provide new and diverse information on intangible inheritances through systematic research, understandably composed exhibition, education that takes people in every walk of life into account, and direct and indirect experiential programs. In this vein, it is necessary for employees in museums to put every effort in it. Rather than only preserving it in written forms, study findings of intangible inheritances must be introduced and educated in the masses via exhibitions. Furthermore, it is necessary to actively carry out continuous studies on the visualization of intangible inheritances, together with its various and positive experimental attempts of exhibition.
