Study on Teaching-Learning Method as to the Types of Groups’ Activities in Kindergarten Ju - Youn Sim Major in Early Childhood Education Graduate School of Education Kosin University Supervised by Mee-Ryang Kweon Ed. D. Abstract This study gives an in-depth analysis on what qualities the teaching-learning method of a kindergarten has as to the types of large/small groups’ activities in its daily schedule. Subject of Inquiry 1: How does teaching-learning method about talking activity work? Subject of Inquiry 2: How does teaching-learning method about fairy tales work? Subject of Inquiry 3: How does teaching-learning method about rhythm activity work? Subject of Inquiry 4: How does teaching-learning method about games work? This study carried out the above purpose targeting “H” kindergarten that has been opened in “B” city on March 2, 1997, a private kindergarten operating with the aim of ‘studying teachers, active children, and encouraging parents”. There are six classes at the kindergarten - two classes for age 3, two classes for age 4, and two classes for age 5. The total number of classes participating in this study was five, and the remaining one class was excluded from this study for a personal reason of the teacher-in-charge. The period of study was from the first week of March 2012 to the first week of May 2012. Based on four-session participant observation as to the types of activities for each class, teachers’ journal, in-depth interview, collection and analysis of documentary data, etc, I categorized significant subjects that were suggested by Hatch (2008), after which the phenomenal qualities therefrom followed classification process. As a result, this study can be summed up as follows: 1. Talking Activity The teaching-learning method about talking activity had the qualities: (i) making a verbal recognition, such as exchange of talking; (ii) giving an instruction with movement limited; (iii) showing an example as a link of activity. Talking between a teacher and a child did a various interaction verbally by which they exchange thoughts and opinions with each other, and it was found that the teaching-learning method of teachers had a directive tendency. So, it is shown that there is need for educational environment that children can take part more freely, and studies on the teaching-learning method about talking activity should be more actively fulfilled. 2. Fairy Tales The teaching-learning method about fairy tales had the qualities: (i) instructing with audio-visual materials; (ii) giving an imagination-stimulating recognition; (iii) setting an example for the next move and preparation. This activity can provide children with amusement of stretching their imagination in fairy tales. But actually, it was seen that teaching-learning method for this activity was somewhat unvaried and, in the same way as the above ‘talking activity’, teachers adopted a little bit more directive method for children. So, it is shown that there is need for an in-depth discussion about teaching strategy, not to mention further studies and development on teaching materials. 3. Rhythm Activity The teaching-learning method about rhythm activity had the qualities: (i) teaching a specific song connected with theme; (ii) setting a verbal example using lyrics; (iii) solving a problem by making a creative rhythmic movement together. Rhythm activity can give stimulation to sensibility of children and help improve their musical sense. But actually, it was observed that teachers mostly instructed children in daily life-based themes or ones that teachers have been aware of, and teachers had recognition of having to teach the element of music to children. So, it is shown that there is need to get out of the existing method that rhythm activity has been cognitively recognized, and a new or detailed teaching-learning method should be invented so that children can feel and experience this activity more freely and variously. 4. Game The teaching-learning method about rhythm activity had the qualities: (i) showing an example needing rules and cooperation; (ii) encouraging children to vent feelings using specified cheering chants; (iii) instructing the rules of determining winning/losing and keeping scores. Game activity helps children feel freedom physically in a bigger space and work off inside feelings. It was observed that teachers gave a clear and specific instruction to children in rules and promise that should be followed in a game, and a teacher-in-charge played a role of a referee to make a more accurate and clear judgment. The teaching-learning method adopted mostly by teachers in this activity included ‘giving an intervention in the game’, ‘instructing rules and promise of game’, and ‘showing an example so that children could follow’, etc. So, it is seen that there is need to invent more various games so that teachers and children can be more freely and actively involved in games, not tied down by strict rules and promise. Based on the above points of study, I could see obviously that there is need of (i) expanding the scope of this study; (ii) examining other unobserved activities; and (iii) having a continuous discussion on educational approaches to nondirective teaching-learning method. This study provides significant data in that the practical sides of teaching-learning method as to the types of activities, available in kindergarten, are considered qualitatively. But, concerning various causes of teaching environment that appears by havi
