This study aims to verify the effectiveness of a group coaching program conducted to improve undergraduates’ interpersonal skills and communication competence. The followings are the results of the research. 1. Does group coaching affect undergraduates’ interpersonal skills? 2. Does group coaching affect undergraduates’ communication competence? 3. Do the effects of group coaching last even after the completion of the group coaching? For the research, this study organized an experimental group and a control group with seven undergraduates from K University located in Seoul for each group. For the group coaching program, they were divided into two groups, four and three, in consideration of the similarities by grades and interaction. 7 sessions of group coaching were performed on them once a week and two hour per time, and afollow-up coaching was performed after 4 weeks. To verify the effects of the program, pre- and post-test were executed and a follow-up test was performed after 4 weeks. And the measurement tools used for this study are as below: for interpersonal skills, the one developed by Warner (2007) and then translated and utilized by PSI Consulting, Corp. was used, and the questionnaire designed by Jeong Tae Yeong (2010) to measure interpersonal skills was used. Also, for communication competence, this paper employed an inclusive interpersonal communication competence scale (Global Interpersonal Communication Competence; GICC) devised by Heo Gyeong Ho (2003) based on Rubin (1991)’s advanced research on the components of communication. Data for this study were collected through pre-test, and follow-up test, and data analysis and answering to the research questions were made through descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, independent smaple t-test, paired-sample t-test. one-way within-subjexts ANOVA, and mixed ANOVA. All these statistical analyses used SPSS for Windows Version 17.0k. Results derived from this study were as follows. First, there was statistically significant difference in the effects of group coaching on undergraduates’ interpersonal skills. Because the average score increased, group coaching affected the undergraduates’ interpersonal skills positively. Second, there was statistically significant difference in the effects of group coaching on undergraduates’ communication competence. Since the average score increased, group coaching affected the undergraduates’ communication competence positively. Third, regarding the durability of effects after the completion of group coaching, pre- and follow-up tests showed significant difference, statistically. However, post- and follow-up tests indicated no significant difference. And since the follow-up test score increased more than the pre- and post-test scores, the effects continued even after the completion of the group coaching. This study has some limitations like a small number of samples or limited subjects; however, it has its significance and implications as follows: From academic aspects, first, based on the psychology theory of coaching, this article developed a group coaching program and examined its pre-, post-, and follow-up effectiveness. Second, in the midst of the increase of youth unemployment, companies demand undergraduates to be equipped with interpersonal and communication capacities. And this study examined the effectiveness of a group coaching program targeting undergraduates. Third, this article suggests the concrete practical behavior in the post-process among the pre-, post, and follow-up processes to conduct the group coaching program. Fourth, this study is significant in that it examines the durability of a group coaching program’s effects on undergraduates through pre-, post-, and follow-up surveys. And from practical perspectives, first, this study provides positive answers to the question of “Is group coaching effective?”. Second, it suggests the ground to the use of coaching in various ways. Third, this paper proposes a practically applicable program in order to improve undergraduates’ interpersonal skills and communication competence. Fourth, it provides a guideline to be used in educational institutions or actual spots of education as presenting the research procedures and methods. Fifth, this study is significant in that to verify the effectiveness of group coaching, it provides the criteria to analyze the effectiveness and also the range of research. Lastly, based on the research results, it gives suggestions for follow-up research.
