Children need help in coping effectively with stress because they lack judgement or perception of problematic situations or emergencies than adults. Anyone can experience positive or negative stress and children are likely to use some type of coping method to protect themselves. However, accurate dealing of stress is important for children still in developmental stages. According to recent news articles, the number of adolescents who have sought counsel due to depression and stress have doubled over the past 3 years. The 'adolescent counseling status', a report by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family handed to congressperson Eunhee Kang, shows that the number of adolescents seeking consultation due to stress compulsion, depression, and other mental health problems have increased to 10.8 thousand last year, 2.5 times greater than 4.3 thousand in 208. Among the consults, academic and career-related problems were accounted for 33%, the highest ratio(KBS news, 03.10.2012). In the this context, stress from his/her surrounding and the social structure is more serious than a simple finger cut for a child to bear. Therefore, this study has distributed 341 surveys to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in 3 elementary schools located in Seoul and collected and analyzed 304 surveys - not counting the unanswered 37 surveys. In-depth interviews with 15 students were conducted to investigate children's stress factors and coping methods and the desires of the school social welfare services in detail. The results were as follows: 4th grade 39.8%, 5th grade 36.8%, 6th grade 23.4%, male 54.3%, female 45.7%, single parent families 7.9%, dual income families 51.3%, and single income families 48.7%. Analysis of the responded stress factors and coping methods revealed that the highest stress factor was parents with 2.17, career and future with 2.11, and the lowest was family with 1.59. In coping methods, the highest was problem-focused solution with an average of 2.46, emotional relief, and social support was lowest with 1.86. Finally, children showed desires for a school social welfare service due to career and academics with 2.50 which showed a large difference of average from school life with 2.31 and parents with 2.33, indicating that children are more troubled by career and studying. Upon performing t-test, variance analysis, and in-depth interviews to analysis the difference between stress factors, stress coping methods, and desire for school social welfare services according to the characteristics of the respondents, significant differences were observed in parents, career, and teacher according to stress factors, friends according to sex, family and career according to academic performance, family according to economic levels, teacher according to religion, friends according to existence of siblings, and parents and family according to single parent families. The analysis of different stress coping methods revealed significant differences in grade, sex and academic achievement, economic level, and single parent families. Analysis of desire for school social welfare service according to sex exhibited significant differences in career and studying and school life and according to religion, parents. Also, the majority of stress were of studying inflicted by parents and children were stressed when they felt something was unfair or when they have siblings. For stress coping methods, children dealt with stress by sleeping, crying, playing games or enjoying activities they like, or expressing anger when they are alone. In desire for school social welfare service, children with experience of counsel were more likely to feel desires for school social welfare service than those who had none and other responses for children have not experience counsel were availability of peer counsel and resolution of stress. Though the average of stress factors were generally low in the results, in-dept interview concluded that children were stressed due to parents, teachers, friends, and siblings and reasons for stress were unfairness, inability to act according to their opinion, intervention during independent conduct, etc. Similar to social support being the lowest of stress coping methods, in-dept interviews revealed that children cope with stress by sleeping, crying, expressing anger alone, or playing games. Analysis of school social welfare service desires revealed desire of school social welfare services in career and learning and in-depth interviews revealed desire for help or guidance for difficult problems. The participants of this study are children. They are likely to act according to the wishes of parents or teachers than their own decisions. At this, this study proposes the necessity of a school social welfare service as a measure for children to be able to deal with their stress more effectively. This is because a school social worker can be stationed in schools with easy access, inspection, and intervention when children face hardship. Also, based on the fact that only 1,476 of the 5,882 nationwide elementary school conduct school social welfare operations, a ratio of 25.09%, the current study proposes the need for school social welfare service to minimize children's stress.
