As old age is being prolonged, interest in aging well is increasing. In such circumstances, the present study attempted to explore aging and what constitutes aging well from the perspective of the Korean elderly. For this, a phenomenological study was conducted on 20 Korean elders (average age of 76.7, 10 females and 10 males) to examine the meaning of aging and aging well. The main results of the study were as follows. First, aging is not a transitional phase from middle age to old age; it is experienced continuously and developmentally, and it produces the ambivalent outcomes of personal acceptance and feelings of social inadequacy. Second, it was verified that aging well is decided through various perspectives. Most elders simultaneously operate various perspectives such as ‘social comparison perspective’, ‘life span perspective’, and ‘meaning perspective’ to consequently evaluate that they have aged well. Third, there were cultural characteristics to perceptions of aging well. To Korean elders, their offspring have complex and absolute meaning, being an important source for the meaning of life and a resource for aging well. Not only that, the Korean concept of aging well showed a tendency to emphasize self-management and consideration for others from a moral and community oriented perspective. Lastly, to age well, basic conditions such as ‘health’, ‘financial ability’, and ‘family’ must be met and ‘moral cultivation’, ‘everyday activity’, ‘meaning seeking activity’, ‘social relations’, ‘religion’, etc. were verified to function as supplemental strategies to aging well. Based on these results, personal and social efforts must be made simultaneously to improve the quality of life for elders in the future and it is argued that this starts from an understanding of the diverse lives of elders. This study has significance in that it gained practical knowledge that provides understanding of aging and old age and academically, it presents a new perspective regarding the conceptualization of successful aging.
