The purpose of this study was to examine the conditions of infant class mathematics activities by dividing infant classes into the group for infants younger than 2 and that for 2 year old infants, and to analyze the difficulties in leading mathematics activities recognized by infant class teachers and their requirements for supports. In terms of this, the study tries to draw some suggestions for desirable practice of infant mathematics education in actual scenes by grasping what recognition and requirements daycare teachers in charge of infants have concerning mathematics education for infants, and to provide basic data for the construction of a mathematics education program for infants applicable to actual classes. The research questions established on the basis of the purpose of this study are as follows. 1. How are the conditions of the operation of mathematics activities in daycare center infant classes? 1-1. Are there differences in plans for infant class mathematics activities between ages (younger than 2 and 2 years old)? 1-2. Are there differences in doing infant class mathematics activities between ages (younger than 2 and 2 years old)? 1-3. Are there differences in evaluations of infant class mathematics activities between ages (younger than 2 and 2 years old)? 2. What are the difficulties in leading mathematics activities recognized by infant class teachers and their requirements for supports? 2-1. Are there differences between ages (younger than 2 and 2 years old) in the difficulties with infant class mathematics activities recognized by infant class teachers? 2-2. Are there differences between ages (younger than 2 and 2 years old) in the requirements of supports for infant class mathematics activities recognized by infant class teachers? The subjects of this study were 227 daycare teachers in charge of 0~2 year old infant classes at some daycare centers located in Busan Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangnam-do. The research tool was modified and made up for use by the current researcher based on such previous studies as Cheon (2009), Lee and Lee (2008), and Hwang (2005). In order to examine the conditions of infant class mathematics activities, the teachers’ recognized difficulties and requirements for supports, the frequency and percentage of each question was yielded from the collected data, and verifications and t-test were carried out with the teachers into the group for infants younger than 2 and that for 2 year old infants in order to examine whether there would be differences between the groups. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. With respect to research question 1, as a result of the analysis of the differences between the group for infants younger than 2 and that for 2 year old infants by dividing the general conditions of leading infant class mathematics activities into planning, execution, and evaluation, it turned out first that there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in information sources, things to consider, and focused mathematics goals at the time of planning infant class mathematics activities. That is to say, it turned out that both the teachers in the two groups referred to daycare related web sites most and considered infants’ interest and requirements when planning mathematics activities. And, the most focused goals of mathematics activities appeared to be routine experiences of mathematics knowledge in diverse everyday situations. Second, with respect to the infant teachers’ execution of mathematics activities, the two groups showed significant differences in number of sessions, time length, group composition, presence and absence of mathematics activity areas, and types of mathematics activity plays. Third, as a result of the comparison of the differences between the group for infants younger than 2 and that for 2 year old infants in evaluative methods and evaluation usages at the time of the infant class teachers’ evaluation of mathematics activities, there appeared no statistically significant differences. That is to say, both the teachers in the two groups most frequently used episode recording (observation) as their evaluative method, and the results of evaluation in recording infants’ development. With respect to research question 2, as a result of the examination of the difficulties in leading mathematics activities recognized by the infant class teachers and their requirements for supports, it was found out first that there were statistically significant differences in factors causing difficulties between the two groups, and that the teachers for infants younger than 2 felt more difficulties than those for 2 year old infants including ‘difficulties in interaction at the time of mathematics activities with infants,’ ‘difficulties due to infants’ no response to teachers’ questions and statements,’ and ‘lack of infants’ interest in mathematics activities.’ Second, it turned out that there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in their requirements for supports in execution of mathematics activities, and both of them had high requirements for supports.
