The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of changes in the mathematical understanding of two-year-old infants about the mathematical inquiry section of the national standard for childcare curriculum and the meaning of their changes in an effort to provide some information on the management of infant care curriculums for two-year-olds. Two research questions were posed: 1. What changes are there in the mathematical understanding of two-year-old infants who engage in math activities of the national standard for childcare curriculum? 2. What changes are there in the individual mathematical understanding of two-year-old infants who engage in math activities of the national standard for childcare curriculum? The subjects in this study were seven selected two-year-old infants in a daycare center in a district of Seoul. A participant observation was made from July 24 through October 2, 2014, while they engaged in math inquiry activities in class for optional play, and the changes in their mathematical understanding was analyzed. A mathematical understanding test was conducted before and after this study to grasp their level of mathematical understanding. The findings of the study were as follows: The infants who were at the western age of two underwent the following changes in mathematical understanding while they interacted with one another, their teacher and teaching aids and while they played with one another: "being aware of quantity," "getting interested in space and figure," "getting interested in differences," "getting interested in simple regularity," and "discriminating." They made an inquiry into the math inquiry activities provided by their teacher, and they asked her questions when there's something they were curious about. In that course, they acquired the mathematical vocabulary that the teacher used, and they actually made use of the vocabulary they acquired. They also learned mathematical concepts through interaction with the teacher and found it joyful to play with one another. Accordingly, teachers should be sensitive enough to catch the needs of infants and encourage them to behave and speak in the right way. They should offer strong support for them, have a lot of communication with them and stimulate them to engage in activities with interest and delight. As two-year-olds are able to reconstruct mathematical concepts and improve their understanding by having verbal and behavioral interaction with their peers and by imitating one another, their mutual interaction and play with peers should be encouraged as much as possible. The two-year-old preschoolers underwent another changes in mathematical understanding not only through the intentional math inquiry activities but also by gaining various experience in daily routine life. So teachers should keep an eye on two-year-olds and provide appropriate intervention for them to internalize mathematical concepts through informal math experience. Finally, the level of the mathematical understanding of the two-year- old preschoolers was analyzed in relation to the mathematical inquiry section of the national standard for childcare curriculum. As a result, they were good at discriminating between level 1 and level 2 of "being aware of quantity." But they couldn't discriminate between different levels in the other factors, which were "getting interested in space and figure," "getting interested in differences," "getting interested in simple regularity," and "discriminating." Therefore levels 1 and 2 should properly be regulated in accordance with month age and in consideration of individual variances.
