Materialistic western civilization has been the cornerstone of modernization. Now, people are turning their eyes to spiritual culture as a way of envisioning a healthy future for humanity. In these times in need of new values, voices are being raised for the importance of spiritual culture and human dignity as well as globalization geared toward diversity. It is foreseen that the paradigm of divisionism which dominated the world during the last century will be further eschewed and a new paradigm based on consilience and fusion will be actively sought out. Korean tea consciousness is consciousness of our tea, in search of that which is 'ours,' relying on the Korean way of thought. The consciousness regarding our tea has been formed and persisted through a long history beginning with the period of the Three States until today. Although the times and circumstances have changed, the essential characteristics have continued on. This consciousness of ours is called 'Eastern Tea Consciousness'(東茶意識). And the core of this consciousness can be summed up as supreme harmony(太和). Trying to define the Korean tea consciousness founded on cultural self-respect, this paper examines the formation and development of 'Eastern Tea Consciousness.' The focus is on understanding the characteristics of our tea consciousness implied by the concept of Eastern tea and the development and function of the consciousness. This study concludes the meaning of 'Eastern Tea Consciousness' as a 'prototype of tea spirit' toward which our tea culture should aspire, reflecting the Korean national character beyond the changing circumstances through time. 'Eastern Tea Consciousness' may be viewed as manifesting a sense of autonomy, with a certain pride in our tea and an identification of ourselves as Easterners. It also indicates a tea spirit attained through a thorough study and experience of tea. In Korean writings about tea, mutual harmony, or further, supreme harmony, has consistently appeared as a common denominator in tea consciousness. With his practicing principle that 'tea and the mind are the same(茶心一如),' Yi Mok (李穆, 1471~1498) overcame the gap between tea and the human subject. He also pursued the completeness of both the inside and outside, where metaphysical mysticity and material reality are in tune with each other. The state of 'tea of my mind(吾心之茶)' can be understood as indicating a spiritual empathy in which one's self and the object become one, rather than the subject and the object being oppositionally divided. Yi Deok-ri (李德履, 1728∼?) tried to elevate material wealth and spiritual richness to a higher level through tea. He offered an 'Eastern Tea Consciousness' aiming for upward standardization, helping the nation and providing for the people's needs whereby the material and the spiritual, as well as the essence and the phenomenon can form a balance. This line of thought may be an influence of the Realist School of Confucianism prevalent at the time. 'Consilience' is the key word behind the tea consciousness of Cho-ui (草衣, 1786∼1865), who sought perfect interpenetration through mutual understanding and harmony. In addition to his duty of practicing Seon, Cho-ui spent his lifetime awakening himself through the way of tea. The idea of non-duality, meaning that essence and phenomenon, Seon and tea, Buddha and the people are not two, was the main principle of his life. This belief in non-duality led to an ideal state of tea spirit, 'impartiality.' The idea of supreme harmony holds a significant meaning for today's Korean society. A paradigm based on this idea should adequately call attention to the essence of human nature and furthermore, offering a direction for establishing the identity of Korean tea culture. It is expected that the concept of supreme harmony(太和) will contribute to a healthy tea culture in which mind and form, essence and usage are in balance.
