Many serious problems in the subway system frequently occur because it is a typically closed environment. Thus, it is necessary to identify corresponding sources and to estimate pollutant sources in order to protect people's health and to keep clean subway environment. The purpose of this study was to analyze indoor air and to quantitatively estimate source contributions in various sites in a Seoul Subway Station. PM10 samples were collected on the Miasamgeori Station of Subway Line 4 in Seoul metropolitan area from April 21 to April 28, July 13 to July 21, and October 11 to October 19 in the year of 2010 and January 11 to 17 in the year of 2011. We collected PM10 samples and further analyzed inorganic elements, ions, and carbon contents in the samples. Thus, the aerosols collected on zefluor filters and membrane filters were then analyzed for trace metals, soluble ions, and carbons. A total of 29 chemical species (Ag, Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Si, Ti, V, Zn, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, OC1, OC2, OC3, OC4, CC, PC, and EC) were analyzed by ICP-AES, IC, and TOR method after performing proper pre-treatments of each sample filter. Based on the obtained chemical information, positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to identify the sources of indoor particulate matter. The optimal parameters for performing modeling were determined by a trial and error process. PM10 in the Station M was characterized by six sources such as biomass burning and outdoor source (multiple pollution related source), vehicle source (combustion related source), soil source, 2nd aerosol source, ferrous source, brake wear related source. These contributing sources can be divided into indoor and outdoor sources. Indoor sources include ferrous related source and brake wear related source. In addition, outdoor sources include biomass burning and outdoor source (multiple pollution related source), vehicle source (combustion related source), soil source and secondary aerosol source. In detail, there were a total of 6 sources in PM10. The average contributions of outdoor in PM10 emitted from each source were as follows: 45.4% from secondary aerosol source, 26.1% from vehicle related source, 16.2% from biomass burning and outdoor related source, 6.6% from soil related source, 4.2% from brakewear related source and 1.6% from ferrous related source. The average contributions of Platform in PM10 emitted from each source were as follows: 32.6% from brakewear related source, 22.6% from secondary aerosol related source, 17.8% from vehicle related source, 16.8% from biomass burning and outdoor related source, 5.7% from ferrous related source and 4.6% from soil related source respectively. The average contributions of Tunnel 1,2 in PM10 emitted from each source were as follows: 56.9% from brakewear source, 17.9% from socondary aerosol related source, 13.8% from ferrous related source, 5.8% from vehicle related source, 4.0% from biomass burning and outdoor related source and 1.6% from soil related source respectively. This study provides a basic information on the major sources affecting indoor air quality in underground stations, and thus it will help to manage the indoor air quality by suggesting reliable control strategies for the relating sources. Further investigation is needed to apply effective management schemes.
