This study set out to identify the major motives to use Kakao Talk and Kakao Story, which have maintained their solid No. 1 position in subscriber changes and number of free app downloads in spite of endless free and paid apps driven by the recent spread of smart devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs. The study also aimed to test the effects of the variables of external motives to use those apps on intention to use them by combining and applying the uses and gratification theory and the technology acceptance model. As a result, the highest 32.8% of the respondents said that they used Kakao Talk and Kakao Story a couple of hours a day, and the highest 39.5% logged onto them 21 times or more per day, which indicates that the overall Kakao Talk and Kakao Story users recorded a considerable amount of usage a day. The age groups that mainly used Kakao Talk and Kakao Story were those who were in their twenties or thirties, who accounted for 88.9%, which suggests that Kakao Talk and Kakao Story are the principal means of communication among the young generation. The biggest motive to use Kakao Talk and Kakao Story was "convenience," which was followed by "entertainment/fun," "psychological stability," "information sharing," and "social interaction" in the order. Those motives were most influenced by "setting the message alarm," "item and giving a present," "fast response speed," "easier to use than e-mail," "sharing videos and photos in daily life," "promoting my hobbies and leisure life via photos," "sending videos, photos, and MP3," "feeling like there is somebody next to me," and "exchanging greetings with friends." In an effort to analyze how those variables would affect the intention to use Kakao Talk and Kakao Story, the investigator applied the technology acceptance model by Davis. In the research model, "social interaction," which was assumed to be a major driver behind the intention to use those apps among the users of the messenger, a common means of communication, turned out to be no major cause with no influence on the intention to use those apps. It was also analyzed that "psychological stability," "information sharing," "entertainment/fun" and "social pressure" only influenced perceived usefulness. The most noteworthy finding was that "cost consciousness" had effects both on perceived usefulness and ease, which indicates that the perception that Kakao Talk and Kakao Story are "free" in terms of economy and value made the users believe that they were using the apps in a useful and convenient way rather than the message function of a smartphone. The study reviewed the previous theoretical backgrounds and researches and tested some hypotheses. The findings proved some of the previous results and presented different results regarding some variables from the previous studies. The study analyzed the factors to determine the motives and intention to use Kakao Talk and Kakao Story, attempted to identify what made app users have perceived usefulness and ease based on the analysis results, and investigate their impacts on intention to use. Those results and discussions will hopefully serve as good basic data for the development of popular apps.
