First developed in the 1960s, the artificial silkworm feed, first, has reduced labor of farmhouse cultivating young leaves of mulberry tree that are used for raising silkworm. Secondly, the artificial silkworm feed enabled to raise silkworm regardless of seasons while silkworm used be raised only in springs and falls. Thirdly, although silkworms must eat young leaves right after their hatching, the artificial silkworm feed ensured no synchronization between hatching time of silkworms and budding time of young leaves. However, artificial silkworm diet that has only 23% of mulberry leaf powder failed to obtain consistent growth of silkworms whose main food is mulberry leaves, caused missing young silkworm (disappearing with no corps after death), and made silkworms retarded in growth and venerable to disease. this study was initiated to develop a new artificial silkworm feed that can supplement those weaknesses. In regard to growth and development, among natural substances well-known for its effect, we added the followings additives into the existing artificial feed by 5% each: hot water extracts of red ginseng and remaining red ginseng marc that were verified by previous studies; the natural substance of mulberry fruit powder, rubus coreanus marc and yeast that were considered to be of help; and pure mulberry leaf powder. Every 50 silkworm was grouped with each of the feeds with additives as subject groups and compared with a control group prescribed with only the existing artificial feed. From the 13th day after 12 days after hatching, weight and length of silkworms in the subject group were measured once in three days until the 25th day which is the end of experience. As results, it was confirmed that the subject groups added with red ginseng liquid, red ginseng marc, and mulberry leaf powder presented significant increase (p<0.05) of weight and length by a factor of about twofold as compared to the control group. In addition, 1-Deoxynojirimycin (1-DNJ) which is an indicator of functional silkworm was observed to show significant increase (p<0.05) by a factor of approximately twofold in comparison with the control group. As for the rest additives such as mulberry fruit powder, rubus coreanus marc and yeast, there was no or less significant difference (p<0.05) in their weight and length as well as 1-DNJ against the control group. Taking into account economic perspectives, the red ginseng liquid that is hot water extract of red ginseng, as well as red ginseng marc that is left after the extract, experienced 166% and 167% of excellent economic feasibility, respectively in regard to weight increase rate compared to the unit price of the control group with no additives. And also 1-DNJ also appeared as high economic feasibility as 157% and 167%, respectively. Therefore, as the artificial silkworm feed has been recently re-reviewed, it is expected that we can elevate or supplement advantages and disadvantages that the artificial feed have had since 1960's of the first development in order to provide assistance in enhancing added value for silkworm raising farmhouses, educational learning programs, four season based functional additive silkworm industry. Keywords: silkworm artificial feed, 1-Deoxynojirimycin: 1-DNJ, α-glucosidase, hot water extracts of red ginseng (red ginseng liquid), functional silkworm industry.
