Recently, as energy drinks being sold for the purpose of fatigue recovery is outstanding in their effect of shaking off sleepiness due to high caffeine contents, the preference of energy drinks among the youth is being increased. Thus, the objective of this study was to provide a basic data of nutrition education for energy drinks containing high level of caffeine. The preference of energy drinks among the youth and recognition for risk of high caffeine intake and their intake status were surveyed with 400 middle school students (male: 236 female: 164) in Seoul area. The data was analyzed for the frequency analysis, chi-square test, one-way ANOVA using the SPSS/Windows. Results indicated that most of the students were under the category of normal weight (49.0%) and underweight (41.3%) and average monthly allowance of the students was mostly under 50,000 Won. Most of the students (50.3%) regarded energy drinks as fatigue recovery drinks and the students were most familiar with Hot 6 with the highest preference. 50.8% of the respondents had a past experience of having taken energy drinks and male students experienced energy drinks more frequently than female students. In addition, experience of taking energy drinks increased with the higher grade, overweight/obesity group, and the students whose parents had a job and monthly allowance was plenty. Monthly drinking frequency of the students who had past experience of having taken energy drinks was 1 time and male students were more frequently taking energy drinks than female students and most of the student replied that they used to enjoy energy drinks due to sleepiness and deliciousness. Most of the energy drinks was taken individually but the students of overweight or obesity group had energy drinks with bread or confectionary in most cases. It was also revealed that the students used to enjoy energy drinks when they felt thirsty or while studying in particular and in case of female students and high graders, they replied to enjoy more energy drinks while studying and in case of male students and lower graders, they replied to enjoy more energy drinks when they felt thirsty. As a primary motivation of energy drink intake, most of the students replied that they decided to have energy drinks through advertizing. 54.7% of the students used to enjoy energy drinks individually during moving to their home, school or private academy. Most of the students recognized caffeine content of energy drinks to be high but they hardly recognized the real amount of caffeine of energy drinks. Only 22.8% of the students confirmed food ingredients in packing of energy drink. In view of above results, the youth must receive the nutrition education for exact information of the risk of energy drinks containing high level of caffeine that may create problem in case of their indiscriminate intake.
