Of the elements of Gukak, beats are considered as one of the most important elements along with Shigimsae. Their importance has driven active research efforts in previous studies and promoted ongoing efforts for their instruction in the field of education. In response to that flow, the Revised Music Curriculum of 2007 presents the concepts related to beats anew, which raises a need to set specific instructional plans to teach the content of newly presented "Hanbae of beats" and "forms according to Hanbae." Sanjo is a type of folk music with distinct and diverse changes to beats. Its features from slow to fast beats can be utilized during class to investigate ways to help the students comprehend a musical element called Hanbae and acquire its concept effectively. This study thus set out to analyze the instructional content on Hanbae in Sanjo and beats in the five authorized sixth-grade music textbooks and their teachers' manuals according to the Revised Music Curriculum of 2007, devise an instructional plan for the Hanbae of beats by using the Sanjo beats, and propose specific instructional plans for lessons. The instructional plan was divided into six major stages to specifically teach the Hanbae concept of beats by using the Sanjo beats: the first stage was "appreciating Gayageum Sanjo and feeling the changes of Hanbae"; the second stage was "appreciating Gayageum Sanjo in parts"; the third stage was "playing the beats of the pieces in the textbooks"; the fourth stage was "playing a piece in various Hanbaes"; the fifth stage was "connecting and playing a piece of various Hanbaes"; and the final stage was "class presentation," where the students would make an individual or group presentation on the piece they learned and were confident with. Six pieces were selected for the study including the Kim Jukpa-style short Gayageum Sanjo and folk songs in the textbooks. Based on those conclusions, the study made several proposals for developmental research in future: First, the study limited the subjects to a sixth-grade class in an elementary school in Uijeongbu. More classes should be included in the study to secure more objective findings. Second, there is a need to secure many hours through active curriculum reorganization to teach the students beats and their Hanbae concept. If the 12-lesson instructional plan in the six stages set in the study is further divided and applies more diverse activities, more room will be created in instruction. Third, the study limited the instructional plan design and its application to lessons to Jajinmori, Jungjungmori, and Jungmori beats of the various Gayageum Sanjo beats, which raises a need to expand the instructional scope to Jinyangjo, Gutgeori, and Danmori beats in future study. Finally, the study devised and applied an instructional plan for the Hanbae concept of beats by using the Sanjo beats. It is needed to investigate its specific effects on the understanding of the Hanbae concept of beats among the students by making up and administering a survey before and after the lessons.
