The purpose of this study is to develop a practicable young children's play program in the forest that combines a play and a forest in order to improve an children's self-regulation, essential for a life as a healthy member of a society, social competence that influences the social and emotional development, and sense of happiness, and apply it to five-year-old children to check its effectiveness. The research topics defined for this purpose are as follows:
Research Question Ⅰ: What were the goal and objectives, the contents of the play program in the forest for young children? Research Question Ⅱ: What were the effectiveness of the play program in the forest for young children?
To develop a play program in the forest designed to improve an children's self-regulation, social competence, and sense of happiness, I have surveyed domestic and foreign cases that practice education related to a forest and education in the forest. An analysis and an investigation of nature play and nature education were conducted based on an investigation of related literature and earlier studies, while a preliminary program was performed with a view to examining safety, accessibility, and practicality with regard to the environmental particularity of nature. Two sessions of a foreign practice in forest education and five sittings of consultation with specialists finalized the completion of a play program in the forest incorporating the results. The program was composed of play activities practicable in the forest with a focus on the five sections of 2012 Nuri course for five-year-olds: physical exercise and health, communication, social relationships, art experience, and nature exploration. The program in the forest was divided into three major stages of forest road exploration, free play in the forest, and large group activity, and large group activity ran a play in the forest prepared for each session. Each session of the program included seven plays in the forest designed to improve self-regulation, eight plays in the forest designed to improve social competence, and nine plays in the forest designed to improve sense of happiness. The evaluation of the program's effectiveness was performed by teachers. To test the effect of a play applied to a play program in the forest, "S" kindergarten located in "P" city of Gyeongbuk Province was selected as an experiment and comparative group and the adjacent "B" kindergarten was selected a control group; twenty childrens were selected for each group while total twenty-four sessions of play activity were conducted. As to the data from the test before and after the program implementation as well as a follow-up review, SAS 9.1.3 was used to come up with average, while two-way ANOVA with groups and test time as factors of repeated measurement was performed.
The effect of application of play in the play program in the forest is as follows. First, the test of the effect on an children's self-regulation showed that in both prior and posterior testing of self-regulation as a whole and all the subordinate factors of self-control, reduction of impulsiveness, and attention and concentration, the score of the experiment group appeared significantly high as compared to those of the comparative group and the control group. Second, the test of the effect on an children's social competence showed that in both prior and posterior testing of social competence as a whole and all the subordinate factors of emotional control, emotionality, peer relationship skills, and understanding of social norms, the score of the experiment group appeared significantly high as compared to those of the comparative group and the control group. Third, the test of the effect on an children's sense of happiness showed that in both posterior and follow-up testing of sense of happiness as a whole and all the subordinate factors of immersion, health, spirituality, peer relationship skills, relationships with teacher, perception and achievement, emotion, relationships with parents, satisfaction with life, the score of the experiment group appeared highest, followed by that of the comparative group, while the control group scored lowest. These results suggest that a young children's play program in the forest is an approach effective in promoting an children's self-regulation, social competence, and sense of happiness as well as a program fit for an educational initiative that takes advantage of a forest in young children's education.
