Early music education among artistically-talented children through emotions is usually approached by means of singing and instrument education, and the latter is preferred. Of instrument education methods, education through piano is usually preferred, because among many instruments, piano producing most basic and varied ranges and sounds, offers the easiest method for learners to acquire musical sense and to use educational contents with diverse changes such as rhythm, melody, chord and dynamics. Entering the 20th Century, in line with development of piano education methods along with advancement of music education, new introductory textbooks for piano were written. Introductory textbooks, represented by Beyer were extended to a number of textbooks such as Alfred Piano Book, Bastien Piano Basics, Piano Adventure, Piano Success. This study chose textbooks such as Beyer Piano Book, Alfred Piano Book, Bastien Piano Basics, Piano Adventure, Piano Success which are preferred as a major introductory textbook in the country. It examined the characteristics of these textbooks and analyzed the merits and demerits of each one so that piano instructors are able to choose more ideal and appropriate textbooks. By doing so, this study ultimately aimed to contribute to their performance of early education. Five textbooks can be divided into two categories by and large. Beyer Piano Book was composed focusing on learning of piano technique, while other four textbooks were structured for learners to cultivate musical ability using piano. So, these four were made up of a diverse range of learning methods and theoretical background of pedagogy. While Beyer Piano Book first teaches white keyboards, other four first teach black keyboards and then white ones in relation with black ones. On the other hand, whereas Beyer Piano Book uses manuscript paper from the beginning, other four textbooks, instead of using it from the beginning, approach only with length of notes to solve learner’s fear of keyboards and left hand learning. Four textbooks except Beyer Piano Book were made for children to learn musical concept and do practical performance at the same time, and also to attract their interests with not boring repertories. They had systematic and integrated composition to render repeated education by each theme of lesson theory, music dictation, technique, development of musicality, performance, in an orchestrated effort to invite interests of beginners. The analysis of the textbooks tells us that there is no perfect textbook suiting to everybody. Therefore, instructors are required to understand characteristics and nature of each textbook and to choose textbooks and teach according to level, aptitude and needs of learners.
