Examining the difficulties that students experience when learning about changing seasons in modeling pedagogy applied lessons원문보기

Despite of its popularity, model-centered teaching in science education has not been researched widely in an elementary level. For this reason, this study examined the difficulties that students experienced in science lessons that were grounded in modeling pedagogy when learning about changing seasons. The data were collected in two different sixth grade classrooms. The lessons were on the third chapter of the textbook, “causes of changing seasons,” which sixth grade students learned in their first semester. In these lessons, the student-led cycling modeling was implemented, which included expressive modeling, experimental modeling, evaluative modeling, and exploratory modeling. As data sources, both the whole group lessons and the small group lessons were video-taped and transcribed. The group interviews were conducted, and researcher’s reflections were also written. The results showed that sixth grade students experienced two kinds of difficulties in modeling lessons: The difficulties that the students recognized, and the difficulties that the students did not recognize. Under the difficulties that the students recognized, three reasons were identified. First, the students had difficulties when they tried to remember and articulate models that they either learned in the previous lessons or encountered in science book. Second, they struggled with the model materials. Third, the students had a difficult time when interacting with their peers. Under the difficulties that students did not recognize, four different behaviors were identified. First, the students kept looking for the facts rather than thinking about the causes. Second, they had difficulties because the previous lessons did not provide the necessary background knowledge to them for the following lesson. Third, the students struggled with different context clues. Finally, they did not utilize the various criteria when evaluating models. This study suggested that the difficulties that students experienced in modeling lessons show their cognitive abilities and limitations at the same time. The teacher’s roles in modeling lessons are also suggested.
