The increasing weakening of the Q-angle and the gluteus during weight bearing dynamic movement is known to potentially cause PFPS by increasing knee valgus. The purpose of this research is to test the possibility of preventing dynamic knee valgus and safe methods of weight bearing by measuring the gluteal muscle activity and the dynamic Q-angle while performing transformed single leg squat. Test subjects are 15 healthy male (age 20~29). Three types of squats: Single Leg Squat (SLS), Dumbbell Single Leg Squat (DSLS), Cane Single Leg Squat(CSLS) were performed at random orders to each subject. The difference between static Q-angle and the Q-angle after performing one of the three types of single leg squats in addition to the muscle activities of gluteal medius (GM) and gluteal maximus (GMAX) were compared. The result showed that there is a significant difference between static Q-angle and the three types of single leg squats (p<.001) and DSLS and CSLS showed more significant difference than SLS (p.05), and comparing the muscle activity level of GMAX during each single leg squats, GMAX did not show significance as well (p>.05). This research showed that the Q-angle increases when one performs single leg squat compared to the static state, and DSLS and CSLS reduced the dynamic Q-angle compared to SLS. In addition, in light of the lack of difference in GM and GMAX muscle activity levels while performing single leg squats, single leg squats can act as a weight bearing exercise that effectively modifies knee valgus in the transitional period from non-weight bearing to weight bearing exercise and further prevent PFPS by reducing the amount of stress produced at patellofemoral joints.
