Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties were evaluated from water, methanol, ethanol, and acetone extracts of three Korean medicinal plants (Artemisia annua L., Ginkgo biloba leaf, and Korean red ginseng) for dental application. The total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 0.3 ± 0.3 to 41.0 ± 1.0 gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g in different solvent extracts of each plant, the highest being in Artemisia annua L. water extract. Conversely, the lowest TPC was determined in Korean red ginseng water extract. Studies on anti-inflammatory effects showed that all solvent extracts from each plant have the ability to reduce nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine RAW 264.7 macrophages. The methanol extract of Artemisia annua L. showed the highest inhibitory effects on NO, PGE2, and cytokine production. Determination of antioxidant activity revealed that the highest DPPH-scavenging activity was found in the Artemisia annua L. water extract, which was 91.0 ± 3.2 units (%), equivalent to 99.9% α-tocopherol. Antimicrobial activity was tested on cariogenic and periodontopathic microorganisms by paper disc method. The antimicrobial studies revealed that Artemisia annua L. extract inhibited the growth of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. animalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. polymorphum, and Prevotella intermedia, all of which are strains involved in periodontal diseases. Meanwhile, Ginkgo biloba leaf and Korean red ginseng extracts inhibited the growth of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, both of which cause dental caries. This study shows that Artemisia annua L., Ginkgo biloba leaf, and Korean red ginseng possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial substances, and Artemisia annua L. can be recommended for application in pharmaceutical products for dental practice.
