Abstract The Effects of TV Program's Background Music on Receiver's Flow and Memory by Lee, Seung-Hyun Department of Communication Graduate School, Kookmin University, Seoul, Korea The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of familiarity and tempo of background music on viewers' flow and memory about TV programs. More specifically, this study seeks to verify the effects of background music with different familiarities and tempos on the flow (which consists of attention concentration, enjoyment, and time distortion) and the memory (which is comprised of aided recall and recognition). It also explores the interaction effects of two independent variables. Experiment method was employed to test the research questions. Prior to the main experiment, pretest was conducted to make experimental stimuli. Two pieces of music were selected as a highly familiar music and an unfamiliar music among classical and pop music, and were recorded into three different levels of tempo: fast, mid, and slow. Two pre-made foreign reality programs were edited to constitute experimental stimuli with background music of different levels of familiarity and tempo. 12-group factorial design was occupied with 360 experiment participants. The major findings of this study are as follows: First, the more familiar the background music of TV program was, the higher the flow of viewers on the program was. More specifically, TV programs with more familiar background music drew higher level of attention concentration, enjoyment and time distortion than those of unfamiliar background music. Second, the more familiar the background music of TV program was, the higher the level of viewers’ memory on TV program. TV programs with more familiar background music induced higher unaided recall and recognition from TV viewers. Third, viewers’ flow on TV program was different according to the tempo of background music. TV programs with mid and slow tempo made higher attention concentration and enjoyment than those of fast tempo. However, in regard to time distortion, the effects of tempo were resulted inconsistently in different TV programs. Fourth, the tempo of background music was found to draw different level of memory on TV programs. Mid tempo music was discovered to make much higher unaided recall than fast or slow tempo music. However, in case of recognition, music with mid and slow tempo were found to draw significantly higher recognition than that of fast tempo. This study is significant in that it examines the effects of background music in TV program, which has rarely been explored academically in communication field. It also has value in that it used experimental design to test the effects of familiarity and tempo of background music in TV program on the flow and memory of viewers. From this study, the producers of TV production would find important implications on the significance of background music as the key elements of program production. Theoretically, this study would draw more attention on the production elements and procedures in TV production field, especially the effects of background music and other relevant elements.
