The world is making efforts to become one community in every walk of life. In reality, the meaning of multi-ethnic society or multi-ethnic country is now disappearing gradually. Korea is no exception to such a change. Korea has already become a multicultural society where the number of multicultural families is growing rapidly due to influx of foreign workers and international marriages, thereby increasing the number of children who are born in multicultural families. Various problems have arisen as the nation has become a multicultural society, but the government alone is facing limitations in preventing and solving all problems. Diakonia should be practiced as an essential function of the church, but the church falls short of social expectations by reaching out for wrong purposes or creating a mega-church syndrome. Following Jesus’s Great Commission, his commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself” is found in the Old and New Testaments, and the Sabbath, the Sabbatical Year and the Year of Jubilee were legislated to practice love. Jesus also came to the earth in flesh, reached out to the poor, sick and alienated, solved their problems, and was crucified for the redemption of human sins. Through this, he realized diakonia. However, dealing with an increasing number of multicultural families in Korea is beyond the government’s capacity, and the church is weakening its essential function by being obsessed with growing in size. As a literature review, this study is intended to identify problems in Korean society and present a pastoral alternative through preliminary research on a rapid increase in the number of multicultural families. Having become a multicultural society, Korea is suffering from various problems regarding multicultural families, including communication problem, an increase in violence and other crimes, identity confusion of children, divorce and economic hardship. As immigrants in multicultural families may feel robbed in Korean society, it is time for Korean churches to consider immigrants as their neighbors that they should love like a Good Samaritan and to practice diakonia. Based on the meaning of the term, the church and the Old and New Testaments, this study presented a pastoral alternative in detail with an interest in multicultural families in order to perform the essential function, diakonia. First, church facilities should be open to multicultural families so that rest areas, cultural performances, volunteer hair-cutting and medical services, counselling, and church services in their native language can be provided. Second, programs should be established to help multicultural families receive language education, form self-identify, and overcome cultural discrimination and divorce. Korean churches should implement viable programs depending on their facilities, financial circumstances, and size of workforce. They should also make a union with local churches, nurture volunteers within churches, and practice “love immigrants in multicultural families as yourself” through consultation with experts. This in turn will improve the quality of life of immigrants in multicultural families in Korea and enable them to do various activities as a missionary of their country. From their local community, they will be able to have a good impression on Korean Christianity by witnessing Korean churches playing the role of the salt and the light, and to open the door for preaching the gospel. With the advent of the global era in the 21th century, I wish Korean churches will have a chance to practice diakonia with love and understanding of multicultural families.
