The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a customized drama therapy program on developing self expression skills and sociality of children with disabilities (mainly, with intellectual and developmental disabilities). The subjects for the research consist of the following two groups: One is the experimental group with 12 students from an elementary school for special education located in S city in Gyeonggi province, and the other is the control group with 12 children from S community center who were similar in age and disability grade to the experimental group. In the experimental group, subjects were treated with a therapy program based on the EPR model of Sue Jennings and the Role-model of Robert Landy. The program was carried out twice a week from August 29th to October 25th 2011, 16 times in total, and revisions were made according to the students’ adaptation degree and therapy effect. Pre- and post-tests on social skills scales were conducted to examine the scale of self expression skills and development of sociality of the two subject groups. After the pre- and post-tests, the data were analyzed through data coding and data cleaning processes. SPSS version 17.0 was used for statistical analysis. The results indicate that, first, a customized drama therapy program suited to children with disabilities had an effect on improving their self expression skills and developing their sociality. Second, through the EPR model, children with disabilities experienced the steps of Embodiment-Project-Role during the play. Their self confidence was increased due to the extension of sound, and they showed happiness in expressing themselves. Children gradually started to project themselves on the play, undergoing the process of dramatic development. Furthermore in the phase of applying the technique of Role model, children could improve self expression skills by playing their roles in the drama. In addition, they started to understand others and free themselves from their own oppression. As a result, they started to realize and understand interaction with others. The present study is significant for the following reason. Children with grade 1 and 2 disabilities in the experimental group developed self-expression skills and sociality to some extent through a short-period drama therapy program. The study have significance in that the treatment was applied to the disabled children who are normally considered as the most handicapped and highly vulnerable group in the school society where violence and bullying are prevalent these days. Based on the results of the study, it is suggested that more research on practical methods and programs of autonomous drama therapy treatment to children with disabilities should be developed and the therapeutic effects of those programs should be proven to make drama therapy established as a scientific research area.
