Abstract The Effect of Music Therapy using Songs and Mind Maps on Cognitive Function of Elderly with Dementia in a Nursing Home. Lee, Mi-Kyoung Department of Music Therapy Graduate School of Sungshin Women’s University The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music therapy using songs and mind maps on the cognitive function of elderly with dementia in a nursing home. The subjects of this study were selected from residents of the D Daejeon senior care center nursing home who were over 65 years old and whose cognitive function test scores were between 10 and 23. Of the 21 elderly members with dementia chosen, 10 were randomly assigned to an experimental group and 11 to a control group. The music therapy program consisted of 16 sessions for 50-minute that met twice a week from March 3 to April 24, 2014. In order to measure the effects of this music therapy program, which utilized songs and mind maps, on the cognitive function of elderly with dementia, pre- and post- measurements were taken using the MMSE-K scale(the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Exam), which enabled analysis of any possible effects. Both the control group and the experimental group participated in both pre- and post- tests by research design. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in cognitive function between the experimental group and the control group (F=17.517, p<.01). The experimental group, who participated in music therapy, improved their cognitive scores compared to the control group. Besides understanding and judgment, which was one of the subcategories of the five cognitive function categories measured, the rest of the categories showed positive results. For reality orientation(F=22.348, p <.001) and memory scores(F=4.765, p <.05), the experimental group showed a statistically significant higher score compared to the control group. For attention span(F=3.669, p .05), however, the experimental group improved compared to the control group but it was not statistically significant. In language areas the experimental group demonstrated no difference(F=.007, p <.05). The results indicate that the music therapy program using songs and mind maps was an effective intervention to improve cognitive function for elderly with dementia.
