This study aims to study the healing nature of art as analyzing four modern artists who are considered to show inside healing and diverse process of healing. Recently art expression activities are used as a way of self-expression and visual communication for psychotherapy. This shows that the healing nature of art has got attention as an alternative to resolve various pathological issues in the modern society. Modern art therapy is divided into two perspectives, Naumburg’s ‘Art in Therapy’ and Kramer’s ‘Art as Therapy’. Naumburg’s perspective is that image is a tool of symbolic communication so it is applied for diagnosis and analysis in psychiatry. On the other hand, Kramer believes that it should be expected as treatment through inside experience and process of sublimation based on the belief about the healing nature generated during the process of creation. However, in art therapy compared to Naumburg’s ‘Art in Therapy’ Kramer’s ‘Art as Therapy’ is difficult to quantify or structuralize so there is lack of study by art therapists. However, if the consideration about psychological change and healing function generated during the process of creation of art is neglected, the essential part of art is missed in art therapy. That is because the treatment itself is taken place through the process of art.1) Therefore art therapy needs to pay more attention on the healing effects during art activities. Based on this, the study selected artists who are considered to have healing experience through artistic creation activities and significance in art therapy. The study will analyze their artistic worlds to examine the process of healing in their creation activities. Four modern artists in the study overcame their inside conflicts through artistic creation activities. They are Nikide Saint-Phalle who overcame childhood trauma through creation activities, Tracey Emin who healed by herself with art of confession, Keith Haring who used graffiti art to communicate with the society as a sexual minority, and Jean Michel Basquiat who expressed racial discriminative conflicts and existential concerns. Those four modern artists were selected based on Kramer’s ‘Art as Therapy’. That is because all those artists show ‘inside healing through creation’ and ‘process of art sublimation’ which were argued by Kramer. Nikide Saint-Phalle and Tracey Emin often mentioned in their artwork and autobiography that their artwork is treatment. Also Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat were artists in the same age and their artistic language, ‘graffiti’, has art therapy meaning on the aspect of ‘image of free expression’. Above all, they are socially neglected class of people as women or colored races, or sexual minority so their ‘inside healing’ and ‘process of art sublimation’ clarify the value of art as treatment. The method of study is analysis of the background of art therapy based on 20th century art history and development of psychology. Also, it explained theories of Kramer and Naumburg as art therapy theory. Especially Kramer’s theory, ‘Art as Therapy’ was dealt in-depth. Also, in order to support the argument that art activity has a healing effect, it clarifies the reasoning that it can be the process of inside healing as examining opinions of multiple psychologists and art therapists and artists who has been studied. Afterwards it analyzes elements of healing with creativity and sublimation in art activities. Then it gives a specific example of Art brut to strengthen the reasoning of healing nature of art. In the main body it analyzes four artists’ major artwork and their healing process that those artists are considered to have healing experience during the process of building their own art world. It could analyze all different healing natures in those four artists’ own art world and process of sublimation. Nikide Saint-Phalle created shooting painting and expressed his anger inside of him to heal himself. After pulling out all negative emotions, Saint-Phalle started to have emotional change and treatment change. While producing Nana series, she could admire the life and established the identity as a woman. Her work shows the stage of healing and sublimation through art. Tracey Emin honestly talked about the wound in the life to heal herself. Her confessional art work became an opportunity of inside healing for her and sincerity for the public, which shows that it becomes a medium of communication. Keith Haring’s art stressed the importance of communication, his many artworks were expressed with graffiti art, which led a lot of sympathy as engaging in 80s dissemination of pop culture in the states. His art showed art’s positive effects and power. Jean Michel Basquiat’s autobiographical subject chose autonomous distant art so it would express more freely. He shows the process of communication and sublimation through artworks about social conflicts or death or life. Those four artists had different background, situation, and work process but they all tried to identify their own identity through sublimation with art creation work and faced conflicts from the life to heal himself/herself and tried to communicate. Also those artists gained energy through the work of transforming internal issues to artistic forms. Like this when it is considered that art through sublimation is that individual’s internal issues which are not accepted by the exterior world is transformed higher value through artistic forms, the process to make artistic forms for self-integration and communication can be healing itself. The paper would like to help the understanding of the healing nature of art and solidify that many pathologic issues in the society such as art therapy, art education and social welfare can be solved by art activities. Also, it suggests that there should be more considerable perspectives about healing based on art theories to increase the healing perspective of art at the end. 1) Ok-Gyung kim,「Atr as Thrapy: a study of the therapeutic caracteristic and methodology in fine arts」, Korean Society of Basic Design & Art, 2003, p.42
