This study examined an empirical makeup case of ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’, Mozart’s work, by reflecting the characteristic of opera buffa, analyzed its difference from typical opera makeup, and suggested a makeup design based on the opera buffa type. In opera, a composite stage art, stage makeup is included in artistic visual elements along with stage setting and stage costume, expressing personalities, ages, races, jobs, and characteristics of characters. It helps the audience understand the flow of a play and characters, and raises characters’ commitment to their roles, increasing their mental stability and confidence, so it is an important visual element in stage art. Opera buffa is a comic opera that was popular in Italia in 18th century, and the reason why opera buffa developed was that the public could feel familiar with its reasonable and realistic themes, and could laugh and be moved by its simple performance, folksy wits, and comedy through humor and satire. Thus, this study examined expressional methods of opera buffa makeup by discussing comedy that “makes people recognize problems of human beings and society by using laugh, and expresses contradiction or irrationality jokingly, humorously, and satirically”, and by grasping the fundamental meaning of comedy. The characteristics of opera buffa grasped through theoretical literature research can be summarized as below. First, humorous materials brought from daily lives Second, satirical expressions through imitation and parody Third, various musical expression methods considering the distinctiveness of comedy Fourth, dramatic contrast through serious and strict character types Fifth, appearances of realistic characters rather than Gods or heroes of myths Opera buffa makeup reflecting these characteristics of opera buffa is not just to apply makeup to characters ridiculously or exag- geratedly. It can be divided into ‘realistic makeup’ to express internal emotions copiously, and ‘comic makeup’ based on an expression method to induce laugh, the essence of comedy. This study analyzed domestic performance makeup styles focusing on Mozart’s opera buffa ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’ among opera buffa works of 18th century, which is being highly evaluated due to characters with various positions and personalities, and outstanding musical character descriptions, and the results are as below. First, in makeup expressions, 'Le Nozze di Figaro' contains the both comic makeup emphasizing ‘comedy’, and realistic and serious makeup highlighting ‘reality’. Second, the comic makeup characteristic distinctively appears on supporting characters such as Basilio or Antonio rather than on main characters. Third, for comic hair expression methods, hair styles such as a bald wig, hair colors, and hair design changes are important. Fourth, comic makeup expressions include making a man dress up as a woman, drooped eyebrows or eyelids, red nose, red cheek, blubber lip, beard shape, patch, etc. Fifth, characters that are not expressed comically yet have different internal and external personalities have the possibility of buffa makeup. Based on the analysis results, a makeup design for main characters was expressed by combining parody, unpredictability, deviance, deconstruction, etc. among realistic expression methods reflecting reality, and comic makeup expression methods inducing laugh, and its characteristics are as below. The count was expressed with buffa makeup by applying ‘parody’ among comic expression methods, excluding dignity and seriousness, describing him as a character that is obsessed with desire, chasing only women. The countess, a typical Serian character, was applied by makeup based on ‘realism’. It is buffa makeup reflecting the opera buffa type naturally and copiously expressing human being’s internal emotions rather than artificial emotions. Figaro was applied by comic makeup expressions focusing on ‘unpredictability’ and ‘deviance’ among comedy elements. Unpre- dictability was used by hiding Figaro’s cold, smart, and rational internal characteristics and expressing him with a naive and pure figure, and deviance was used by expressing him with a free figure, breaking away from the typical formal and neat figure of a servant. Susana was expressed with buffa makeup focusing on ‘deviance’ and ‘realism’. Deviance from the reality was reflected by breaking stereotypes of a maid, that is, images of neatness and passivity, and by expressing a dignified maid highlighting new images, femininity and sensuality. And realism was used, rather than comic expressions, to emphasize Susana’s personality, that is, high self-esteem, strong self-assertiveness, and boldness enough to mock the count, in spite of her low position. Bartolo was applied by buffa makeup focusing on ‘deconstruction’ and ‘unpredictability’ among comedy elements. Deconstruction was used to express his stubborn figure, applying lantern jaw and half- bald makeup, artificially making his face long, angulate, and fussy. And unpredictability was used by combining crusty eyes and ridiculous spots inharmoniously, giving fun. The reason why people fervently responded to opera buffa was that it induced familiarity by expressing human emotions more copiously, and people could laugh and be moved by comedy through humor and satire. This study expressed opera buffa makeup by applying the two elements, ‘realistic makeup’ maximizing human being’s internal emotions, and ‘comic makeup’ based on parody, unpredictability, deviance, and deconstruction. As cultural industry develops and performance culture is activated, this study is expected to contribute to creating more detailed and diverse makeup designs in accordance with opera types in the area of opera makeup.
