Most of business corporations home and abroad compete among them limitlessly and try to expand market and earnings. Recently, domestic export companies, such as car makers and electronic companies, have solidified their status in the global market and concentrate on such core capabilities as continuous development of technology, improvement of quality and enhancement of productivity. However, their conventional core capabilities gradually reach the limit due to the global fierce competition among countries. On this account, business corporations execute the outsourcing of non-core business to external specialized companies, in order to supplement their weak points, and input more resources in core business and then develop it. Among them, domestic shipper companies recognized the necessity to reduce the cost of logistics and then increased the rate of logistics outsourcing gradually. In particular, the logistics outsourcing market in the United States, Europe and Japan is active continuously and has achieved a gradual growth. Keeping pace with this trend, domestic logistics outsourcing also has increased focusing on large companies’ logistics subsidiaries and tries to advance into global logistics market. In addition, through governmental cultivation of logistics specialists, specialized logistics companies have been established and logistics outsourcing is active for the present. In recent times, however, the domestic business circles of logistics worry about the large company’s subsidiary-oriented rapid growth of second party logistics market and have negative perspectives in that domestic logistics industry cannot secure enough competitiveness in global market due to the expansion of the second party logistics market. In order to promote co-prosperity and cooperation among logistics business corporations, central government enacted the internal transaction prevention law and has regulated such large companies as Samsung, LG, Hyundai and Kia Motors when their consigning quantity of logistics to subsidiaries exceeds a certain rate. In this social atmosphere and with the perception of limitation of growth due to excessive dependence on mother company’s supply, large company-based logistics companies try to be converted into a third party logistics company. In this vein, the purpose of this study was to examine an expansion plan of third party logistics of domestic large company’s logistics subsidiaries by analyzing their examples, reviewing their developmental stages respectively, and comparatively analyzing their policy of growth. For this, the author carried out theoretical examination on domestic and overseas data and analysis on the examples of domestic companies. The examples of domestic large company’s logistics subsidiaries were looked into using such materials as dissertations, published data of governmental agencies, books and publications, and literature data. In order to analyze the examples of companies, the author examined companies’ IR data, public notice data, interview data with the person in charge, media data and promotional materials. In addition, the accuracy of data was confirmed with the most recently published data through the electronic public notice system of the Financial Supervisory Service and the homepage of companies. In addition, by making the most of the author’s practical experience of logistics, the examples of such domestic representative logistics subsidiaries as Hyundai Glovis, Pantos logistics and CJ Korea Express Corporation were comparatively analyzed and then presented a plan with which domestic large company’s logistics subsidiaries could expand their weight of 3PL and grow into a global logistics company. Study findings are as follows: Most of domestic large company’s logistics subsidiaries presented the pattern of second party logistics in their developmental stages, and tried to overcome the limitation of sustainable growth and expand the weight of third party logistics. Followings are suggestions to expand the third party logistics of domestic large company’s logistics subsidiaries: First, in order to achieve ‘globalization,’ it is necessary to carry out M&A and strategic partnership and strengthen a global network. Second, in order to ‘strengthen specialized capability,’ it is necessary to strengthen the existing business and develop IT capability. And finally, as for ‘the governmental policy support,’ it is necessary to establish an integrated logistics governance, cultivate customized special human resources, organize an ecological system for accompanied advance into overseas countries, and carry out financial and tax-system support. Preceding studies have mainly dealt with shipping/port companies and ordinary logistics companies, but this study examined the controversial examples of large company’s logistics subsidiaries of today, and differentiated itself from precedent studies. However, it was difficult to get objective research data and corporate information due to the insufficiency of existing studies on logistics subsidiaries. In order to supplement these shortages, the author’s practical experience was maximally reflected and corporate research papers and the latest seminar data were used maximally. The author hopes follow-up studies will comparatively examine overseas advanced logistics companies closely by taking the difference in national scale of economy and infra into account. In addition, the author hopes studies on large company’s logistics subsidiaries will be continuously carried out in the future from the aspect of co-prosperity among domestic logistics companies and of national development of logistics industry.
