This thesis investigates the healing process of dystopia through the play Our Country’s Good written by a female British playwright, Timberlake Wertenbaker. In modern days of prevailing social unrest and stress, the issue of self-expression and emotional healing and restoration tend to have not only gradually added its importance but also diversified its. Consequently, the interest in development of storytelling and healing contents once was limited to a professional extent, has recently expanded to various fields. To discuss this matter, the healing of individuals and of community is covered through Our Country’s Good in this paper. All the prisoners and the executive members in this writing share the wounds of the deportation from their own country in geological and sociocultural aspects and demonstrate the problems of the oppression over enunciation and forfeited identities in regards to the communications, genders, and social classes. Through analyzing the absurd situations of the prison, I will define the group with the dystopian situations and be examined with the satirical view point of the author. In addition, the educating and healing capacity of dramas shall be explained with attention to the changes in conflicts and the aspects of restoration exposed in the process that characters were reborn as a group of actors and actresses throughout the play. Prisoners were showing their egos oppressed linguistically with social issues of class, race, and gender. But they turned out to experience the expansion of acknowledgement through the process of embodiment and projection by role models they came across from the rehearsal. It means that the play has functioned as a healing tool and with its effect it shows their images overcoming internal traumas and recovering self-consciousness which had been defined by the society. The group of prisoners with their self-consciousness recovered have newly reborn as a group of men of the theater and their new band have brought them to redefine the values needed for their new life in the colony. In short, the band would not surrender to the absurd of the society, become a driving force to build a healthy community by nurturing healthy individuals, and also contribute to establish a curative correlation. In the discussion, it has been confirmed that the play had helped the development of new personalities and the ideal community in the process of seeking the appearance of relief from social oppression and the conflict around them. The author, through this vision, was not limited to exhibit the social issues but demonstrated that the prisoners who were the weak could stand as the cultural mainstream in the midst of constructing a new community by restoring their voices, reclaiming their rights, and recovering identities through the play.
