This study set out to analyze the narrative structures of growth novels in the current 16 middle school Korean textbooks on the central axis of the passage rite process and investigate the diverse patterns of ego-identity search process by the main characters, thus assessing the adequacy of those growth novels according to the developmental stages of learners.
Growth novels tell a story about immature characters going through a process toward maturity through the awakening and hardship of life. Here, awakening and hardship are special rites to move from the immature world to the mature one, being the core of event development in growth novels. That is, narrative proceeds in growth novels based on the basic framework of the "separation-transfer-integration" passage rite diagram, a structural type of narrative.
Stories about main characters of growth novels who become mature through such conflicts and wandering can be a meaningful medium of growth for adolescent learners in the stage of self-exploration. During adolescence, learners identify themselves with main characters in a similar period and are easily assimilated with their emotions and thoughts. Such stories can thus increase the interest and motivation of learners and create the transfer ability to other types of reading. The events that trigger the maturity of characters in growth novels can have educational effects on learners, thus inducing their emotional empathy and internalization and contributing to their ego-identity. It is thus meaningful to assess the adequacy of growth novels in textbooks and search for educational plans.
This study analyzed the narrative structures of The Shower by Hwang Sun-won, A Bicycle Thief by Park Wan-seo, and Camellia Flowers by Kim Yu-jeong, which growth novels are found in middle school textbooks in high frequency, on the central axis of passage rite process. The study found that A Bicycle Thief would be proper for all the grades of middle school and The Shower and Camellia Flowers proper for the eighth and ninth grade by taking the developmental stages of learners into consideration in middle school. Also examined in the study were the learning activities in the textbooks to figure out how those works were learned in the field of education. As a result, the study pointed out that the current textbooks failed to provide the students with teaching and learning opportunities for various literary interpretations by excluding their interpretations as growth novels and proposed that activities reflecting the educational values of growth novels should be added.
