This research is to study the perception of prevalence rate of food allergy, eating behavior, knowledge on food allergy, and food allergen labeling among the students in elementary school and middle school. Based on this, this work would provide the basic materials in establishing the allergen labeling about school meal. The survey was performed by selecting 387 subjects from fifth graders in elementary school and 7th, 8th and 9th graders in middle school located in Gyeonggi Province to see the experience and non-experience, eating behavior, knowledge about food allergy, and food allergen labeling. Students experienced in food allergy accounted for 14.5%, and among which elementary and middle school students accounted for 13.7% and 15.4%, respectively. In the question about whether or not they experienced in allergy, boys were 9.3% and girls were 19.0% by the gender percentage. With regard to the route through which they got to know the food allergy, the experience category came in first. As a symptom, skin disorders were most common such as hives and itches. It was found that most of the students do not receive any medical treatment, in particular, in dealing with allergy problem. Students with food allergy experience whose family members have a family history showed a higher frequency in allergy than students whose family members have no family history. The category of eating behavior indicated a point of 3.68 and the non-experienced group in allergy showed a higher point significantly than experienced group. There was also a significant difference in the category of 'not frequent intake of animal fat such as pork belly.' A percentage of correct answer in knowledge about food allergy showed the relatively low 41.5%. Elementary school students had a significantly higher rate than middle school students. As to the percentage of correct answer according to experience and non-experience in allergy, the experienced group had a higher level than the non-experienced group. The group with a higher point indicated a higher value than that with a lower point in eating behavior category (p<.01). In the category of 'whether or not to understand the friends with food allergy', it turned out to be 3.76. For the menu posted in parents’ notices, 'confirmed occasionally' was most. The important things that elementary and middle school students consider are food name, nutrition information, place of origin, and allergy-causing food. Both male and female students responded with an importance of food name, nutrition information, allergy-causing food, and recipe. Groups with high point and low point in eating behavior category had a highest level of correlation with recipe. It was found that students often confirmed the food allergen labeling on menu. The reason not confirmed is because they are 'able to make a right choice even without allergen labeling.' For the compulsary labeling size in the present act, most students thought that it is proper. They also responded that the direct notice of food name causing an allergy is preferred to the present numbering method. As to the interest in labeling system, answers with 'common' took the highest portion and both male and female students responded with a degree of common level. The experienced group in allergy had not much interest in labeling system, whereas the non-experienced group had a common level. Both groups with a high point and a low point in the eating behavior indicated a common degree about this system. The overall point from students in relation to food allergen labeling turned out to be 3.05. In the category of individual service for the students who have an allergy to food, they responded with a common level in both elementary and middle school students. The same was true with the experienced group and non-experienced group in this questioning category. For their overall hope that school should realize regarding the food allergy, the item of 'preventive education' came in the first place. The experienced group indicated 'better presentation about food allergen labeling' item. The non-experienced group pointed out the 'preventive education.' From the results, it is thought that the knowledge on allergy to food is not enough and that more interest and education about food allergen labeling are needed. For the students with food allergy experience, the allergy-causing food should be consulted with an assistance from medical specialist and then this type of food should be identified through menu with an allergen labeling. It is also necessary that the systematic and constant education about nutrition should be followed up for the appropriate application of allergen labeling system at school.
